Workshop: Reassessing the Unconditional Safety Net

When: 09:30, 10th December 2014

Where: Glasgow University, Department of Philosophy

Much public discussion about welfare reform centres on the desirability
and practicality of a welfare system which provides an unconditional
guarantee of support for individuals, irrespective of whether they are
responsible for the actions that lead them to require that support. In
parallel, recent work in egalitarian political philosophy has questioned
whether providing such unconditional support is morally appropriate, and
whether it is consistent with due respect for the importance of
individual responsibility. We seek to illuminate these questions by
bringing together those who work on the fundamental principles involved
(of responsibility, equality and social justice, mainly) with those who
have defended and elaborated mechanisms whereby these fundamental
principles might be instantiated, for example through the provision of a
guaranteed basic income.
