This theme suggests the exploration of all art forms, Eastern and Western, from within a political and /or religious context. Decidedly broad in scope, historic and current approaches from ancient architecture and dance through cinema and propaganda can be examined, within the contexts of art theory and/or studies of specific eras, such as socialist realism in the former Soviet Union. Jacques and Raïssa Maritain concerned themselves with a wide range of Eastern and Western artistic expression, from the controversial religious art of Georges Rouault to the Jewish observation of contemporary events in the painting of Chagall, from the musical challenge of Jean Cocteau to a life long interest in the poetic quest of Baudelaire and the study of Eastern iconography.
