Mar del Plata City, Argentina.

--- CALL FOR PAPERS ---

The philosophy of technology encompasses a complex set of objects and problems crossing metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, politics and philosophical anthropology, as well as having an undoubted cultural and social significance.

The traditional division between the “natural” and the “artificial” has been put into question by a variety of phenomena in the contemporary debate, such as hybrid entities, bioartifacts, biomimetic artificial systems, and genetic sequences-as-commodities, among others. The Aristotelian and the modern categories seem unable to explain the “hybrid” entities among which we lead our everyday life, and the very notion of “nature” has been altered by the recent biotechnological phenomena. The contemporary debate in the Philosophy of Technology indicates that the natural/artificial dichotomy should be recast from an anti-dualist position or from a more adequate kind of dualism.

The 8th International Colloquium on the Philosophy of Technology aims to contribute to this project. The Colloquia have established themselves as a meeting space between philosophical traditions, and disciplines that delve into, and make use of, models of technology. Under the theme of this meeting, "The nature of the artificial. Problems and perspectives" we aim to host papers examining key concepts concerning contemporary philosophical and theoretical debates, open new avenues of inquiry within the discipline, and strengthen growth and collaboration between researchers dedicated to studying the phenomenon of technology, and its impact on scientific and technological policies.

The papers should be of 30 minutes duration. Presentations on the following topics are encouraged, although we will consider any proposal within the field of the philosophy of technology:

· Ontological and epistemological problems about the natural/artificial dichotomy

· Nature/Culture, Hybrid entities and Bioartifacts

· Technology and politics

· Anthropology of material culture

· Art and technology

· Post humanism

· Ontology of artifacts

· Epistemology of the technical phenomenon

· Normativity in technology

· Phenomenology of the technical world

Proposals for papers should be sent to [email protected] with two attachments (.doc, .pdf, or .rtf) containing:

·       An extended abstract of approximately 500 words, presenting the title of the paper and indicating the argumentative scheme of work. This should include the specification of the problem addressed, the thesis and bibliography.

·       Author details: name, institutional affiliation, and e-mail address.

The name and institutional affiliation of the author must appear only in the second document. The abstracts received will be subject to blind refereed by specialists appointed by the organizing committee. The latter reserves the right to request the full paper if necessary.

Closing day of reception: July 31, 2017. If you are travelling internationally and need advance notification, please ask us and we will fast-track it.

On the dynamics of operation of the International Colloquia on the Philosophy of Technology:

The Colloquium has no parallel sessions in order to promote sustained discussion among attendees. Organizers hope the speakers participate in as many tables as possible to discuss the other presentations. It is also in the tradition Colloquium to continue discussions in a more relaxed way during lunch. For those who wish, the organization includes a midday meal every day of the Colloquium. There are no registration costs and assistance is open to the public.
