Abstract:

It is well known that Aristotle endorsed a correspondence theory of truth based on a concept of truth-making. I argue that he also endorsed a theory of necessity based on a concept of necessity-making. Just as, for Aristotle, there are states of affairs that account for the truth of propositions, there are states of affairs that account for their necessity. Aristotle's account of the nature of these necessity-makers has important consequences for his views on the syntax of modal propositions and his modal logic.
