Details

In his ‘Counterfactual Dependence and Time’s Arrow’ (1979), David Lewis argued that the asymmetry between the openness and of the future and the fixity of the past can be explained in terms of an asymmetry of counterfactual dependence. In my ‘Counterfactuals and the Fixity of the Past’ (2014), I argued that Lewis’s attempt to explain the fixity of the past in terms of counterfactual independence is unsuccessful. In the current paper, I explore the question whether, in spite of this problem, the notion of the future as counterfactually dependent on the present and past may nevertheless be exploited to yield a defensible conception of the openness of the future.
