This summer, the Scottish Post-Graduate Public Philosophy Network is hosting an inaugural series of workshops designed to develop a culture of public engagement among young Scottish researchers. The workshops will develop skills necessary for participants to run public philosophy events, and are made possible by a grant from the Scottish Graduate School of Arts and Humanities. We are now inviting participants for the following workshops:
- 23 June at the University of Edinburgh: Doing Philosophy with the Public. This workshop will be run by Peter Worley, Co-Founder of the Philosophy Foundation, and will focus on communicating complex philosophical ideas in accessible and engaging ways, and devising innovative events aimed at the public.
- 4 July at the University of St Andrews: Designing materials and planning courses. This workshop will focus on the skills required to build effective programs, including both free-standing events and longer, multi-day courses.
- 18 July at the University of St Andrews: Reaching the public: getting grants and advertising to a public audience. This workshop will focus on how to convert the skills of the first two workshops to actual practice, including strategies to draw in participants and write successful grant applications.
We are accepting applications from postgraduate students at Scottish philosophy programs. Travel to Edinburgh and St Andrews for the workshops will be funded.
To apply, please submit a short paragraph (150 words) describing an idea for a public philosophy event you would like to develop at the workshops by 31 May, using this link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sppp1. The proposed event can be in any area of philosophy, continental or analytic, and in any event format.
Please also indicate (a) whether or not you can make it to all three workshops (priority will be given to those who can), and (b) which Scottish university you are affiliated with.
If you have any questions please get in touch with the organizers at [email protected].
