Call for Abstracts and Manuscripts


The Morehouse School of Medicine/Tuskegee University/University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center Partnership is inviting submission of abstracts and manuscripts for oral and/or poster presentations at a national conference designed for Minority Serving Institutions/Cancer Center Partnership (MI/CCP) and other investigators. Tuskegee University will host the conference from January 23-25, 2019. The conference theme is “Effective Health Care and Inclusion: Growing the Next Generation of Researchers for Bioethics, Biomedical, Behavioral, and Health Disparities Research”.

We are seeking abstracts and publishable manuscripts that advance knowledge of bioethical issues in minority health and health disparities research and practice, and that may have policy implications. Authors should expect abstracts and manuscripts to be reviewed for bioethical issues and implications.

Manuscripts addressing ethical issues in these broad areas of work are being sought: 
• Bioethical considerations in the use of “Big Data” in health research
• Risks for health research based on race, ethnicity, gender, or class; 
• Social and cultural dimensions of minority health and health disparities research; 
• Spiritual dimensions of minority health and health disparities research; 
• Personalized medicine: pros and cons, and the impact of race, ethnicity, gender, age and class;
• Informed consent in health disparities research; 
• Community consultation in health disparities research; 
• Risks and benefit in health disparities research; 
• Philosophical dimensions of health inequality and health disparities research; 
• Biospecimens and health disparities research; 
• Returning genomic research results to patients or research participants: New standards and models for clinical care
• Relational Ethics and the Duty to Care: Health Navigators, Samaritan’s Purse, Doctors without Borders, My Brother’s Keeper, Sisters
• Promoting Health Equity: Race and Food Systems
• Research with CLAS Standards: What is working?
• Peer-review process in health disparities research;
• Recruitment and retention best practices in health research; and 
• Training of physicians and health care professionals to eliminate health disparities: Research Findings 

Conference Goal
The goal of the conference is to equip the current and the next generation of researchers with the tools needed to address the bioethical issues raised by biomedical, behavioral, minority health and health disparities research in order to achieve health equity.

Educational Objectives
Attendees can expect to (1) broaden their understanding of bioethical issues specific to minority health and health disparities research, (2) demonstrate awareness of various stakeholders and perspectives impacting resolution of the ethical issues, (3) gain a better understanding of how research on minority health and health disparities can be ethically conducted to eliminate disparities with due attention to contextual issues, individual interest, and entrenched community values, and (4) utilize the knowledge and transforming experience gained to improve health and eliminate health disparities in home institutions or new environments.

Target Audience
The conference should interest MI/CCP investigators, other researchers in bioethics, biomedical, behavioral, minority health, and cancer health disparities research; partnership members; patient navigators, community health advisors; community members; religious, civic and government leaders; potential research participants; optimal health advocates; graduate and undergraduate students, and post-doctoral scholars.

Abstract and Manuscript Submissions
Interested individuals should submit research work Abstracts of 200 words or less by Friday, November 23, 2018. The Conference Abstract Committee and the Bioethics Group will review the abstracts. Selected presenters will receive an acceptance letter, format of presentation, and an invitation to submit a “camera-ready” abstract no later than Friday, December 7, 2018. Selected presenters invited to submit a publishable manuscript of 2,500 to 3,500 words in length, Font and Size: Times New Roman 12 pt,  should do so by Friday, January 18, 2019. We will publish selected papers in the peer-reviewed Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved.
