"Open Philosophy" (http://www.degruyter.com/view/j/opphil) invites submissions for the topical issue "Experience in a New Key", edited by Dorthe Jørgensen (Aarhus University).

DESCRIPTION

In an attempt to illuminate the relevance of philosophical thought this special issue of Open Philosophy intends to discuss the meaning of experience. The traditional notion of experience, according to which experience is a subjective act leading to knowledge, or the mastery of something gained through subjective involvement in the matter, still dominates. However, some philosophers let the word experience connote the coherence of life experience, and others have defined experience as an occurrence or event. This special issue will explore attempts to develop our understanding of the nature of experience by surpassing the hitherto primarily subjectivist or objectivist approaches. It will probe the potential implications of such development for the undertaking of philosophical thought and the analysis of contemporary cultural and social phenomena. For this purpose, the issue invites descriptions, sketches, and discussions of new philosophies of experience that differ from the aforementioned subjectivism or objectivism, including investigations of the methodological and analytical implications of the alternative approaches of these philosophies. Which notions of emotional, intuitive, or immediate experience do they imply, and what epistemological, existential, moral, aesthetic or theological worth do they ascribe to such experience? How do they conceive of aesthetic experience, religious experience, moral experience, or philosophical experience, and what could the benefits of their ideas and methods be for the humanities and social sciences?

Authors publishing their articles in the special issue will benefit from:

  • transparent, comprehensive and fast peer review,
  • efficient route to fast-track publication and full advantage of De Gruyter Open’s e-technology,
  • free language assistance for authors from non-English speaking regions,
  • no publishing fees.
