The Metaphysics of Positivism

Throughout all its stages – from its origins in the works of Comte, Mill and Spencer, through the empirio-criticism of Avenarius and Mach, to the logical empiricism of the Vienna and Berlin Circles – European positivism exhibits an explicit anti-metaphysical attitude, which involves the rejection of any process of inquiry that goes beyond experience or that yields assertions unverifiable by means of experience alone. The positivist critique is a critique of traditional philosophical thinking, insofar as such thinking can be identified with the history of metaphysics. So positivism presents itself as an anti-philosophical movement, or rather as a cultural trend that, in Husserl’s words, “decapitates philosophy” and so implicitly marks its end.
The aim of this special issue is to outline the scope and limits of the anti-metaphysical attitude of European positivism, and, more specifically, to assess whether and to what extent such attitude is grounded on further – and perhaps hidden – metaphysical assumptions.
Themes that contributors to the special issue may address include (but are not limited to) the various senses of “metaphysics” that are relevant to the positivist critique; the diverse theoretical positions endorsed by positivist thinkers in their attack on metaphysics (linguistic criticism, realism, monism, empiricism, physicalism, phenomenalism, biologism, naturalism, etc.); and the relations between thelogico-structural and phenomenological-observative aspects of experience positivistically conceived, at the level of both scientific and ordinary experience.

Author guidelines
Submissions should not exceed 9,000 words including abstract, references and footnotes.
Manuscripts are welcome in English, Italian, German or French. They should be prepared for anonymous refereeing and sent by email attachment in Microsoft Word format to [email protected] (all submissions will be acknowledged).
Submitted manuscripts can be formatted in any clear and consistent style, but authors finalizing their papers for publication will be required to hand in a final version that respects the journal’s stylistic rules (download Style guidelines: http://www.disciplinefilosofiche.it/).
Submission of a manuscript is understood to imply that the paper has not been published before and is not being considered for publication by any other journal. The publication of the papers implies that  authors waive the copyright; they could request the copyright to the jounal for future publication of them.

Nelle sue tre fasi – classica (Comte, Mill, Spencer), empiriocritica (Avenarius, Mach) e logica (circoli di Vienna e Berlino) – il positivismo europeo si segnala per la sua tendenza dichiaratamente anti-metafisica, in quanto volta al rifiuto di qualsiasi procedimento d’indagine che proceda al di là dell’esperienza o che, in ogni caso, conduca ad affermazioni non accertabili in termini di esperienza. Questa critica al pensiero metafisico implica anche una critica al pensiero filosofico tradizionale, nella misura in cui questo, in generale, s’identifica con la storia della metafisica. Nel presentarsi come anti-metafisica, il positivismo si offre quindi come un’anti-filosofia, o meglio come una tendenza culturale che – come nota Husserl nella Crisi delle scienze europee – “decapita la filosofia”, decretandone così implicitamente la fine.
Scopo del fascicolo è evidenziare la portata e i limiti di questa tendenza anti-metafisica e, soprattutto, verificare se e in qual misura a suo fondamento non si pongano altre, talvolta nascoste, assunzioni metafisiche.
Fra i temi che potranno essere affrontati dagli autori si possono indicare a scopo esemplificativo: le varie accezioni di “metafisica” associate alle epistemologie positivistiche; le posizioni teoriche assunte dai positivisti (critica del linguaggio, realismo, monismo, empirismo, fisicalismo, fenomenismo, biologismo, naturalismo ecc.) nel loro attacco ai presupposti metafisici; le relazioni che si vengono a configurare tra gli aspetti logico-strutturali e quelli fenomenologico-osservativi dell’esperienza in senso positivistico, sia dal lato dell’esperienza scientifica sia nei loro riflessi sul modo d’intendere l’esperienza comune.

Istruzioni per gli autori
I manoscritti non devono superare le 9.000 parole, inclusi l’abstract, la bibliografia e le note.
Sono ammessi testi in lingua italiana, inglese, tedesca e francese. I manoscritti devono presentarsi in maniera tale da essere suscettibili di valutazione anonima ed essere inviati in formato Word come allegato di posta elettronica a [email protected]. Di ogni testo verrà accusata ricevuta.
Nella preparazione potrà essere adottato qualunque stile chiaro e coerente, ma in caso di pubblicazione l’autore dovrà inviare una versione finale che rispetti le norme editoriali della rivista (scarica le norme redazionali: http://www.disciplinefilosofiche.it/).
Inviando un manoscritto, l’autore sottintende che il testo non è stato pubblicato in precedenza in nessun’altra sede e che non è oggetto di considerazione da parte di alcun’altra rivista. In caso di pubblicazione, l’autore è tenuto a rinunciare ai diritti a favore dell’Università degli Studi di Bologna. Potrà richiedere alla Direzione della Rivista il diritto di ripubblicare l’articolo.
