CALL FOR PAPERS

Stoicism and Contemporary Thought

The popularity of Stoicism continues to thrive, both among scholars who study the history of philosophy and among non-academics seeking to improve their lives through Stoic practices.

This special issue of Symposion will be devoted to essays that explore how selected doctrines, concepts, arguments, and theories of ancient Greek and Roman Stoic philosophers have been interpreted, adopted, criticized, reconceived, and applied today. How have ancient Stoic ideas inspired developments in the humanities broadly construed, including contemporary thought, philosophy, society, and ways of life? Both essays sympathetic to, and critical of, Stoicism are invited. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

·         Stoicism and contemporary cosmology

·         Stoicism and the metaphysics of physicalism

·         Stoic Providence, theology, and atheism

·         Stoic pantheism and panentheism

·         Freedom, determinism, and Stoic compatibilism

·         Stoicism, the environment, and sustainability

·         Stoicism, minimalism, and consumerism

·         Stoicism and feminism

·         Stoicism and friendship

·         Stoicism and love

·         Stoicism, emotions, and psychological therapies

·         Stoic communitarianism, liberalism, and conservatism

·         Stoicism, citizenship, and democracy

·         Stoic cosmopolitanism and political activism

·         Stoicism, soldiers, and war

·         Stoicism and popular culture (film, music, literature, art)

·         Stoicism, athletes, and sport

This issue will include essays by:

·         Christopher Gill (Emeritus Professor of Ancient Thought, University of Exeter)

·         Emily McGill (Assistant Professor of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Coastal Carolina University)

This special issue of Symposion will be co-edited by Scott F. Aikin (Vanderbilt University) and William O. Stephens (Creighton University).
