Disastrous (In)Determination: Exploring the intersections of domination, desire, and dialogue

With an appearance of increasingly complex crises worldwide, foundations that once felt so solid have begun to crumble. We now see ourselves in a new state of indeterminacy with stakes that are both causes for concern and opportunities for change as the direction of social and political structures become more and more uncertain. For this year’s conference, we hope to create a space for scholars to posit their original work concerning these newfound indeterminacies that now define our world. We invite scholars to tackle these questions by looking at the intersections between domination, desire, and dialogue as they relate to the complex ongoing world crises and the structures that render them (in)determinate.

Submitted works do not have to address all three touchstones of domination, desire, and dialogue, but should contain at least one of the three as a strong through line. Topics can include but are not limited to philosophical discussions of the following:

● Environmental destabilization

● Emerging technology

● Trauma and violence

● Mourning and loss

● Liberation of marginalized identities

● Love and sexuality

We welcome scholars from all philosophical fields and nationalities to participate. 300–600 word abstracts are due by Monday, February 7, 2022. While the conference will be conducted mainly in English, abstracts and accompanying presentations may be prepared in either English or French. Please submit abstracts and contact information via GoogleForm. Abstracts must be attached in a separate document with no identifying information in order to allow for blind review. Applicants can expect a response by the end of February.

This conference will be a hybrid of both online and in-person presentations. If the continuing situation concerning COVID-19 does not permit us to hold the in-person component, we will hold the entirety of this event online.
