Call for Papers: From Beginnings to Ends

Deadline: February 11th, 2022

How have our relationships to beginnings and endings been transformed within contemporary social, political, and environmental crises? How might we be challenged to rethink our relationships to the past, present and future, as well as the relationship between these temporal modes?  The theme, From Beginnings to Ends, is an invitation for philosophers to share work in any area of philosophy that engages with questions of time and temporality, as well as beginnings and ends more generally.

We invite papers that engage scholarship on topics including but not limited to:

  • Phenomenology of time, memory and futurity.

  • Intimacy with birth and death, with perennial and ephemeral values, and with morality.

  • Critical engagements with history: The beginnings of philosophy; the beginnings and ends of metaphysics, of morality and ethics, of epistemology, and of freedom/free will; the question of immortality and the afterlife.

  • Critical race theory, feminist, queer and disability studies: Critiques of normative temporalities, imagining different futures, and reclaiming/remembering different pasts.

  • Persistence and change: Subject formation through time; object permanence; and intergenerational relationships.

Gnosis is published by graduate students in the Concordia University Department of Philosophy in Montreal. We are currently seeking submissions for our Spring 2022 issue. We encourage submissions in English and French from all areas of philosophy, as well as philosophically-minded papers written by graduate students in other disciplines.
