CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS Carleton Music and Culture Graduate Symposium: “Diverse Perspectives on Music, Sound, and Identity”

The Music and Culture Graduate Students’ Society of Carleton University is pleased to announce the call for submissions for its 2022 Symposium, titled: “Diverse Perspectives on Music, Sound, and Identity.” Music and sound have the ability to construct and maintain identities across a range of social, cultural, and political horizons. Our symposium aims to explore how music and sound contribute to the shaping of identity/identities, and to consider how music can be heard through different ears with varying subjectivities. We encourage submissions of research papers and lecture-recitals across a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, music/sound and (dis)ability, music/sound and identity, music/sound education, music/sound and decolonization, music/sound in media, music/sound and authenticity, music/sound and embodiment, music/sound and social (in)justice, sound art and sound studies.

This online symposium will take place via the Zoom conferencing platform on the afternoon of Friday March 25th and during the day on Saturday March 26th. This year we are honoured to welcome two exceptional keynote speakers: Jonathan Sterne (McGill University); and Eric Hung (The Music of Asian America Research Centre).

Applicants are encouraged to let us know about any accessibility needs in submission emails, and we will make every effort possible to assure that the symposium is accessible to all who have identified specific needs. All personal information will be viewed only by the MCGSS executive team and will remain confidential.
