Details

The Beninese philosopher and teacher known as Paulin J. Hountondji was less than thirty when his article, “Comments on Contemporary African Philosophy” (published in Diogenes Volume 18, Issue 71, 1970, Pp. 109-130) became one of the earliest postcolonial publications on the subject by his generation of scholars within human and social sciences. English edition of his magnus opus, African Philosophy: Myth and Reality (1983/1996) is a classic textbook that has continue to attract commendation and critique since yesteryears. His edited work, Endogenous Knowledge: Research Trails (Hountondji 1997); and recent book, The Struggle for Meaning: Reflections on Philosophy, Culture and Democracy in Africa (Hountondji 2002) attest to continuous contributions of Emeritus Professor Paulin J. Hountondji the African to constructive promotion of resources for human and social transformation. In the know that Hountondji will become an octogenarian on the 12th day of April 2022, Society for the Development of African Philosophy, Science and Technology (SODAPSAT) in collaboration with the Guest Editors of the intended special issue of Ogirisi, A New Journal of African Studies invite lovers and scholars of African Philosophy, African Humanities and Social Research for Sustainable Development to submit a scholarly article on any aspect, thought and work of Paulin J. Hountondji.

Food for Thought:

“Philosophy in Africa will be authentically African not through a kind of self-imprisonment into a so-called African way of thinking but through its contribution to the building of intellectual and political self-reliance” (Hountondji 2018. ‘How African id Philosophy in Africa’ in Filosofia Theoretica Vol. 7, No. 3. Pp. 1-16).
