EDITH STEIN AND PHENOMENOLOGY

At the very beginning of 1922, a promising young scholar who had long been attracted and drawn to the Catholic faith decided to get baptized.  Her name was Edith Stein. Working as one of the close assistants of Edmund Husserl, Stein became an important figure in the history and development of phenomenology. To commemorate the centennial of her conversion, the Philosophical Association of the Visayas and Mindanao (PHAVISMINDA), in collaboration with Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), Societas Ethica Philosophica, Inc. (SEPI) and the Iloilo Philosophical Association (IPA), will host a hybrid international philosophical conference with the theme “Edith Stein and Phenomenology.” The event will take place on May 27-29, 2022 at the main campus of EVSU in Tacloban City (for those who will be attending physically) and also virtually via Zoom.

The conference will feature respected scholars on Stein and phenomenology, including Fr. Jose Conrado Estafia (Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary, Tagbilaran City) who recently published a book on Stein’s philosophy, Prof. Dr. Irena Parry Martínková (Charles University, Czech Republic) who has written extensively on phenomenology, Prof. Dr. Mette Lebech (Maynooth University, Ireland), Fr. Francis Paul S. Escaño, RCJ (Rogationist Academy – Davao), Dr. Michael Roland Hernandez (Ateneo de Naga University), Fr. Francis B. Payo (Sancta Maria Mater et Regina Seminarium, Roxas City) and Prof. Zhea Estrada (University of Santo Tomas).

During the conference, a moment will be dedicated as a tribute to the memory and legacy of Fr. Domingo Rafael Alimajen, IPA’s founder and one of the experts of Husserlian phenomenology in the Philippines.

We are therefore calling for participants to submit an abstract (200-300 words only) that talks about Stein and/or phenomenology to [email protected] on or before 20 April 2022. Notifications of Acceptance will be sent beginning 1 May 2022.

Conference registration fee is ₱5,000.00 for physical attendees inclusive of snacks, meals, conference kit, and PHAVISMINDA membership and journal. For virtual attendees, the registration fee is ₱1,500.00 inclusive of PHAVISMINDA membership. Undergraduate students are welcome, with a discounted rate of ₱1,500.00 for physical attendees and ₱750.00 for virtual attendees.

Outstanding papers will be recognized with the Best Paper Award, while selected papers will be included for publication in the PHAVISMINDA Journal and in a Special Issue of ARADMAN: A Multidisciplinary Research Journal of the College of Arts and Sciences of EVSU.

Other topics in philosophy are also welcome and will be grouped together in one breakout session. To pre-register for the event, go to https://tinyurl.com/44phavisminda-conference.
