\nWHAT IS A YOUNG PHILOSOPHER?
\nYour age is irrelevant to whether or not you are a young philosopher. By &ldquo\;young philosopher&rdquo\; we mean someone who has received their Ph.D. in philosophy within the last 6 years. We will also consider submissions from exceptional graduate students who reasonably expect to defend by the Spring or Summer at the end of the 2023-2024 academic year.

\nPROGRAM
\nThis course is structured in four parts &ndash\; (1) aesthetics and sense perception\; (2) speculative aesthetics\; (3) poetics\; and (4) experimental aesthetics &ndash\; \;and analyses a series of aesthetic concepts and phenomena &ndash\; such as aesthetic experience\, aesthetic judgement\, aisthesis\, art\, aura\, beauty\, emotion\, empathy\, imagination\, perception\, sublime\, and taste &ndash\; \;from both a speculative aesthetic perspective and an experimental aesthetic perspective. Whereas speculative aesthetics is the study of aesthetic concepts based on the use of pure reason\, experimental aesthetics &ndash\; a field of psychology founded by Gustav Theodor Fechner in the 19th century &ndash\; is the study of aesthetic phenomena that takes into account empirical evidences from disciplines such as biology\, experimental psychology\, and neurophysiology.

\nPROGRAM
\nThis course aims at investigating a series of metaphysical concepts through the analysis of some of the most important philosophical treatises in the history of Western thought. Students will develop adequate critical and analytical skills by reading philosophical and interdisciplinary texts on topics such as being\, causation\, freedom and determinism\, God\, idealism and realism\, mind and body\, philosophy\, and universals and particulars. Furthermore\, students will learn to orient themselves in thinking by addressing a series of questions\, including: What is philosophy? What does it mean to think? Do humans have free will?  \;

Its main aim is to bring to light new empirical data and uncover novel interesting phenomena that may have the potential to challenge current theories. Empirical studies of the expressions mentioned from such languages\, comparisons with English slurs\, as well as wider cross-linguistic approaches are welcome. We also welcome developments of extant theories in application to the new data or previously neglected phenomena.

The Inquiry Network WIP Talks feature presentations of work in progress related to inquiry\, broadly understood. For example\, presentations might discuss (but are not limited to): the epistemology of inquiry\, the metaphysics of inquiry\, ethical norms of inquiry\, historical perspectives on inquiry\, or the structure of scientific inquiry.
We aim to foster the sharing of ideas in an inclusive\, welcoming and low-pressure environment. Papers that are already accepted for publication will not be accepted. We aim to be sensitive to the needs of early-career scholars.
The group meets biweekly on Zoom during each of the Fall and Spring semesters. Meeting times are determined shortly before the beginning of each semester with the goal of finding a time that works for as many members as possible. Special consideration is given to finding a meeting time that works for presenters of accepted papers.

This signifies that law can be intentionally created and applied to achieve specific objectives. Nevertheless\, there has been insufficient reflection on the distinct legal tools available within and outside the legal arena for the realization of these ends. Theoretical analyses of this instrumental dimension of law frequently focus on its role as a specific social technique\, as exemplified in the work of Kelsen. However\, these analyses often neglect various considerations. For example\, the functions of norms extending beyond mere directives in the realization of ends through the law\, the role of bodies interpreting and applying the law\, or the involvement of legal actors in strategic litigation to advance these ends.  \;
Now this debate assumes a new dimension with the questions raised by numerous contemporary legal tools or innovations. Instruments such as nudges\, symbolic or communicative legislation\, visual law\, or possibilities allowed by technological developments\, such as the use of artificial intelligence in regulation\, or the use of collective intelligence in the production of law\, represent just a few of the recent additions to the legal sphere. This workshop aims to advance the theoretical and practical understanding of the instrumental dimension of law\, particularly as it relates to these legal tools.
Conceptual\, normative\, and practical approaches (e.g. study of cases\, jurisprudential analyses\, or studies legal officials&rsquo\; behavior) are welcome. Submissions are invited to explore\, but are not limited to\, the following questions: \;
1. To what extent do current practices for achieving ends through law align with theoretical frameworks regarding the instrumental role of law? \;
2. In what ways do possibilities afforded by technological developments\, such as the use of artificial intelligence in regulation\, impact the conceptualization of the instrumental dimension of law? \;
3. What role do innovative legal tools play in shaping the effectiveness of law in achieving specific ends\, and how can their potential be harnessed for optimal outcomes? \;
4. To what extent does the incorporation of collective intelligence in the production of law influence the dynamics of legal decision-making and the attainment of ends within the legal system? \;
5. How do the potential risks associated with the utilization of new legal tools (such as nudge\, symbolic law or algorithmic regulation) interact with the potential benefits for the rule of law and democracy\, and what strategies can be employed to maximize the positive impacts while mitigating the potential negative consequences within legal frameworks? \;
 \; Participants can send their abstracts (under 500 words) to the convenors by March 31st\, 2024.

The contemporary dominance in culture of the naturalistic paradigm requires Christian philosophy to reflect on naturalism in the broadest sense (in its various forms)\, together with its conditions and consequences\, and to rethink its relationship to this philosophical tradition. Naturalism rejects the possibility of something existing\, being known\, or being explained that is separate from the material reality given in empirical cognition. Along with this\, it denies human beings transcendence with respect to the natural or social world. In its contemporary iteration\, this tradition appeals to the solutions and methods of domain-specific forms of scientific inquiry\, relying on them for its own authority.
\nFor Christian philosophy\, naturalism represents a powerful challenge. It is possible to see in it a threat to Christian philosophy\, but it is also possible to discern in it an opportunity for a more critical evaluation of Christian philosophy&rsquo\;s previous solutions\, and an opportunity to develop new ones. There is a need for a better understanding of naturalism itself\, as well as of what the various domain-specific sciences (including the natural and social sciences\, as well as the humanities and\, currently\, neuroscientific research in particular) have to say about the world and about human beings. Systematic and historico-philosophical questions equally still call for debate&mdash\;in relation to the centuries-old dispute between naturalism and anti-naturalism\, as well as the changing place of Christian thought within it. In our own time\, one can witness diverse attempts by Christian thinkers both to critically discuss naturalistic positions and to implement naturalistic approaches or solutions within Christian thought itself. Certainly\, the latter cannot ignore the fact that naturalism allows philosophy to maintain cognitive contact with domain specific forms of scientific inquiry.

\nWe live in a world riddled with epistemic wrongs\, from the incidental put down of a marginal voice to the systematic extinction of whole knowledge systems and the continued epistemic disempowerment of whole populations through colonialism and racism. This event brings into dialogue philosophers and community members in order to theorise \;reparations for such distinctively epistemic wrongs (20th \;June)\, and \;start on actual reparative work in the context of post-Apartheid South Africa (21st \;and 22nd \;June).
\nEpistemic reparations are &ldquo\;intentionally reparative actions in the form of epistemic goods given to those epistemically wronged by parties who acknowledge these wrongs and whose reparative actions are intended to redress them&rdquo\; (Lackey 2022\, Proceedings and Addresses of the American Philosophical Association). The paradigm of such reparations is when victims of gross human rights violations exercise their &lsquo\;right to be known&rsquo\;\;&mdash\;the right to tell their story in the way and the space they choose\, with the corresponding duty perpetrators have to \;bear witness. Two days of the event will\, thus\, feature apartheid activists\, their children and grandchildren telling their stories through talks\, discussion\, and art.
\nWe invite abstracts from philosophers for the first day of this event.

\nThis event is a part of the Epistemic Reparations Global Working Group \;supported by the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs at Northwestern University. WAIT\, WHAT? A Graduate Conference on Nonsense and Category Mistakes \;
The Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy (WFAP) welcomes submissions of abstracts for its 13th annual graduate conference: \;Wait\, what?! A Graduate Conference on Nonsense. The conference will take place in hybrid format July 4 &ndash\; 6\, 2024.
\nConference Venue: \;Department of Philosophy\, University of Vienna\, Austria (hybrid)
Dates: \;July 4 &ndash\; 6\, 2024
Abstract Deadline: \;April 1\, 2024
Notification of Success: \;May 31\, 2024
Keynote Speakers:
Clare Mac Cumhaill (Durham) &\; Rachael Wiseman (Liverpool)
Ofra Magidor (Oxford)
Adrian Moore (Oxford)
Topic:
Nonsense is a kind of a failure of engaging in rational discourse that seems more fundamental than saying a mere falsehood &mdash\; to utter nonsense is to have failed to say anything at all. This year&rsquo\;s WFAP graduate conference aims to bring together early career and advanced researchers in order to discuss questions such as: How is an illusion of sense even possible? How can one distinguish nonsense from sense? How do different theories of meaning account for nonsense? Are there distinct kinds of nonsense\, e.g. gibberish\, category mistakes\, ambiguities etc.\, or are all cases of nonsense due to the same kind of transgression? What is nonsense&rsquo\;s role in philosophical theorizing\, both as a target of criticism and as an argumentative device? Does nonsense occur in ordinary discourse or is it a phenomenon that is particular to philosophical theorizing?
We welcome submissions on any topic related to our theme including but not limited to:

Several known criticisms in the literature have already pointed out problematic aspects of this interpretation\, such as the lack of a satisfactory account of probabilities\, or the huge ontological cost of MWI. Our criticism\, however\, does not go into the technical details of any version of MWI\, but is at the same time more general and more radical. We show\, in fact\, that a whole class of theories&mdash\;of which MWI is a prime example&mdash\;fails to satisfy some basic tenets of science which we call facts about natural science. The problem of approaches the likes of MWI is that\, in order to reproduce the observed empirical evidence about any concrete quantum measurement outcome\, they require as a tacit assumption that the theory does in fact apply to an arbitrarily large range of phenomena\, and ultimately to all phenomena. We call this fallacy the holistic inference loop\, and we show that this is incompatible with the facts about natural science\, rendering MWI untenable and dooming it to be refuted.

\n\nPhenomenology and queer theory\, as a form of critical theory\, are generally considered to be entirely distinct styles of thinking\, if not straightforwardly opposed in their presuppositions and aims. However\, this course will explore how&mdash\;much to the contrary&mdash\;phenomenology should instead be considered as an inherently queer method.
\n\nAfter all\, characterised by the so-called &lsquo\;reduction of the natural attitude&rsquo\;\, it exists precisely in what we could call the &lsquo\;bracketing of (hetero)normativity&rsquo\;. To that end\, we will first consider how the project of a &lsquo\;queer phenomenology&rsquo\; can be conceived in a properly methodological sense\, distinguishing it from a limited phenomenology of sexuality or gender. Second\, we will critically discuss contemporary phenomenological forms of heteronormativity\, particularly in France\, in order to illustrate how heteronormativity is not simply a political but a distinctly methodological&mdash\;and thus phenomenological&mdash\;problem. Third\, we turn to Husserl in order to conceive of the reduction as an inherently queer category. Finally\, we will apply the phenomenological insights thus acquired to the specific experience of AIDS in order to show how the queer perspective can serve the phenomenological method in general\, specifically by providing the opportunity for integrating both love and embodiment into Heidegger&rsquo\;s existential ontology.

\nKent PhiGS -- the philosophy graduate society at the University of Kent at Canterbury (United Kingdom) -- \; is pleased to announce its Sixth Annual Graduate Colloquium\, to take place on 5-6 June 2024 at the University of Kent\, and online.
\nThe Colloquium aims to promote discussion among graduate researchers working in the same general areas as us at Kent\, where we have a wide range of topics of inquiry. Such diversity promotes the advancement of inquiry through cross-pollination between fields\, and the Colloquium seeks to facilitate such fruitful encounters. We invite submissions from graduate researchers -- masters as well as doctoral -- on the following or related topics:
\n- Philosophy of mental health\, especially concerning autonomy and responsibility
\n- Role ethics
\n- Philosophy of medicine\, especially concerning disease definition
\n- Epistemology\, especially disagreement and belief formation
\n- Gradualist approaches in metaphysics and ontology
\n- Pragmati(ci)st approaches in philosophy of science and metaphysics
\n- Approaches to mathematical semantics
\n- Conception of the self by liberal theories
\n- Evidential Pluralism and Artificial Intelligence
\n- Reconciling the manifest and scientific image\, especially with respect to time.
\nSubmissions should take the form of an abstract of no more than 400 words\, the talks themselves being about 30 minutes in length. Abstracts should be anonymised\, in PDF format\, and sent as attachments to an email. In the body of the email please give name and return email address\, as well as institutional affiliation and whether you wish to present at the Colloquium in person or online. We understand that it is the nature of these talks to be works-in-progress\, so there is no requirement to submit a whole paper in advance: the talk\, when given\, is the paper. The language of the Colloquium is English. Please send abstracts to Mark Garron at \;mg734@kent.ac.uk\, to arrive no later than 5 April 2024.
\nUnfortunately\, we do not have funds for travel and accommodation for graduate speakers\, although your own institution may be able to provide such a facility if you wish to present in person. \n\nABSTRACT
\nIn this talk\, I will present some early results of an empirical study on the meaning of slurs conducted with Rodrigo Diaz (IFS-CSIC\, Madrid). Many hypotheses have been proposed in the philosophical and linguistic literature about the meaning of slurs\, both in terms of what information these words communicate and by what linguistic mechanisms they communicate it. Our study aims to test laypeople&rsquo\;s intuitions via questionnaires and to determine the extent to which these intuitions correspond to the hypotheses in question.

Title: Rethinking Models of Disability and Developing Inclusive Institutions
Speaker: Alan Jurgens
Date: April 10th\, 2024 (Wednesday)
Time: \;8.30AM GMT/2:00PM India/ 7:30PM Wollongong
Platform: Online (Zoom link will be shared closer to the date)
Abstract:
Currently\, there are numerous competing models of disability that not only provide particular conceptions of the notion of &ldquo\;disability&rdquo\;\, but also offer different means for determining how disabilities impact individuals&rsquo\; wellbeing\, when a disability should be considered pathological or a disorder\, and set a theoretical basis for practical interventions to improve the wellbeing of disabled individuals. In this talk I will draw on autistic philosopher and neurodiversity proponent Robert Chapman&rsquo\;s (2021\; 2023) work to discuss how disability may be best understood by utilizing an ecological functional model where the focus is on the intersection and overlaps between relational contributions to collectives and group functioning with individual functionality. This presents an alternative to both social-relational models of disability advocated by other neurodiversity proponents and the orthodox medical model of disability\, which neurodiversity proponents often see as inherently pathological and stigmatizing. After presenting this alternative model\, I will then explore how the ecological functional model of disability is able to help inform how to develop inclusive environments for neurodivergent individuals\, such as universities. I&rsquo\;ll argue that developing inclusive universities requires not just collaboration with neurodivergent students and staff\, but also the creation of communities of practices where neurodivergent individuals are able to be leaders in creating the change they need.
About the Speaker:
Alan Jurgens is a philosopher specializing in the philosophy of psychology\, disability studies\, and neurodiversity. He holds a Ph.D. with a focus on enactive social cognition and an M.A. in philosophy with a specialization in phenomenology. He is a Research Officer at the University of Wollongong\, where he also convenes a Masters of Autism Teaching program.
Jurgens' research and teaching center on building the capacity of autistic and neurodivergent individuals\, and he applies philosophical approaches to develop inclusive practices in education and community settings. His work advocates for relational models of disability and challenges traditional perspectives on social cognition. For more details\, please visit his website at \;https://alanjurgens.com/.
Where is enactivism headed? What are some of the main problems and key issues researchers will need to take into account in order to maintain (or expand) its status as a revolutionary view of mind and cognition?
\nIn order to tackle these questions\, the Brazilian research group CLEA (Cognition\, Language\, Enactivism and Affectivity) is holding a series of online debates called &ldquo\;The Future of Enactivism&rdquo\;\, bringing fresh and critical perspectives to this research program. Each session will consist in a main presenter and a critical commentator. Members of the audience will also be able to ask questions and participate in the debate.
\nThe first event of the series is called &ldquo\;Enactivism: Utopian and Scientific&rdquo\; and will feature Russell Meyer (Chinese Academy of Sciences\, Institute of Philosophy) as the main presenter and Guilherme Sanches de Oliveira (TU Berlin) as critical commentator. It will be held online on Thursday\, April 10th\, at 8:30 AM Brasilia time (GMT-3). We invite everyone to participate by registering beforehand at cleafilosofia[at]gmail.com in order to receive the link.

Ever more scientific fields&mdash\;from medical science to fundamental physics&mdash\;are turning to ML to solve long-standing problems or make new discoveries. At the same time\, ML is used across society to gain knowledge and information. DL models determine social-media newsfeeds\, aid governments and industry in detecting fraud\, and now ChatGPT has become integrated with Bing search and Quora.com answers. It is essential that we understand the potentials and challenges that come with using ML as a way of structuring all of our knowledge.

\nTranscendental Turn in Contemporary Philosophy&ndash\;9: Metaphysics\,Epistemology\, Theory of Consciousness\, Cognitive Science and AI\, Theology
\nDear Colleagues\,
\nFrom April 11 to April 13\, 2024\, the IX Moscow international conference (workshop) «\;Transcendental turn in contemporary philosophy&ndash\;9: metaphysics\, epistemology\, theory of consciousness\, cognitive science and artificial intelligence\, theology»\; will be held.
\nFaculty of Philosophy of the SAUH\, Faculty of Philosophy of the RSUH\, Foundations for the Humanities\, SCMAI RAS invite you to participate in it.
\nThe workshop&ndash\;2024 continues the series of thematic workshops &ldquo\;Transcendental Turn in Contemporary Philosophy&rdquo\; which were held in April 2016 (proceedings: https://elibrary.ru/item.asp?id=29024766)\, April 2017 (proceedings: https://elibrary.ru/item.asp?id=30560011)\, April 2018 (theses: https://elibrary.ru/item.asp?id=35240888)\,April 2019 (theses: https://elibrary.ru/item.asp?id=39452678\,proceedings: https://elibrary.ru/item.asp?id=41494716)\, April/October 2020 (theses: https://elibrary.ru/item.asp? id=44404439)\, April 2021(theses: https://www.elibrary.ru/item.asp?id=47196636\; proceedings: https://www.elibrary.ru/item.asp?id=48458596)\; April 2022(theses: https://www.elibrary.ru/item.asp?id=49505613\; proceedings: https://www.academia.edu/93905826/)\; April 2023 (abstract: https://www.academia.edu/110312036/).
\nPerspective/scope of the conference. In his definition of transcendental philosophy Kant postulates shift (turn) from studying of objects to studying of [aprioristic] mode of cognition [CPR\, B25] as «\;the altered method of our thinking»\; [CPR\, BVXIII]. On the one hand\, such transcendental turn leads to new metaphysics\; on the other hand\, the transcendental shift to studying of «\;mode of our cognition»\; predetermines influence of a transcendentalism on contemporary development of epistemology\, cognitive sciences\, and artificial intelligence.
\nFormat: there will be several thematic sessions in the mixed format (offline and online).
\nMain themes (sessions/round tables) of the workshop:
\n11:04 (SAUH)
\nØ\; \; 1.1. How metaphysics (as a science) is possible (?): on the way to transcendental metaphysics (anniversary meeting dedicated to the 300th of the birth of Kant)\;

\n2nd International Symposium on Transformational Ideas in a Changing World: "The Internationalization of Democracy"
\n \;
\nSubmission Deadline: April 12th\, 2024\, by midnight (Indonesian Time).
\n \;
\nThe Faculty of Philosophy WMSCU (Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University) welcomes submissions for an upcoming International Symposium on the theme of &ldquo\;The Internationalization of Democracy&rdquo\; at WMSCU Indonesia and Online meeting platform (hybrid) on 10-11 May\, 2024. \;
\n \;
\nDemocracy is often regarded as the ideal \;form of government for all nations (Lopes and Casarõ\;es: 2019). In certain ways\, democracy is regarded as an essential component of the common good and should be considered a Universal Human Right\, implying that all human beings should and have the right to live under the rule of a democratic government. The global society encourage \;every nation \;to establish democracy in every corner of the world\, \;generates the idea that without democracy\, there can be no justice and no common good.
\nSeveral international issues even seems to be urging the establishment of Global Democracy\, including the war between Russia and Ukraine\, Israel and Palestine\, the Philippine claim to some islands in the West Philippine Sea\, the power of social media in democracy\, the refusal to face the International Court\, and the need for international coordination to resolve global warming.
\nThe issues listed above appear to advocate for the internationalization of democracy. At the same time\, we should observe that academic research on this subject is still fraught with debates on whether an internationalized democracy is necessary or even possible. While some may find this uncertainty frustrating\, we in the Faculty of Philosophy at Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University (WMSCU) see it as an opportunity and a duty at hand. The signals of the necessity for an internationalized kind of democracy serve as an invitation to global intellectuals to wrack their brains in pursuit of an acceptable solution.
\nFor this very reason\, WMSCU has thought it right\, just and opportune to organize an international symposium on &ldquo\;The Internationalization of Democracy&rdquo\; for the year 2024. This symposium intends to reflect on: (1) what internationalize democracy is\; (2) whether it is the right path to take\; (3) whether it is even possible\; and (4) what are the challenges that the world will have to face in case this indeed is the direction in which the world is heading.
\nFor this event\, the WMSCU Faculty of Philosophy invites academicians\, experts\, and practitioners to discuss the various issues involving the internationalization of democracy and to propose recommendations on how it can be achieved\, in case it is indeed envisioned as the future scenario for the world.
\nOne of the ways by which we can depict the internationalization of democracy is the transformation of the former &lsquo\;nationalistic&rsquo\; type of democracy to a globalized one (i.e.\, not only from the point of view of economy but in all aspects of a democratic society). This requires the establishment of international institutions\, procedures and processes that we usually find in a democratic country.
\nUniversal participation is one of the basic tenets of democracy and establishing this will require finding mechanisms that will not only work for one nation or for just a group of people but mechanisms that will work for the entire family of nations and for all the citizens of the world.
\nPaying attention to the institutions\, procedures and process that may be required\, as stated above\, we have identified several topics that may have to be studied in order to determine the need or the feasibility of establishing an internationalized democracy. They are: Education\, Politics and Economics\, Culture and the Empowerment of Minorities.

This is apparent by the fact that they prominently rely on phenomenal spatial structures\, but also by a variety of perceptual roles that enter into elements like storytelling\, sound\, kinesthetic feedback and immersive design. \;
\nHow should we understand the character of perception in games and virtual environments? \; While normal perception registers ordinary perceptual properties\, players perceive objects and properties imposed by images\, rules\, symbols and ludic context. In the perception of virtual worlds\, users are not perceiving ordinary objects\, but rather images and symbols designed to instil imagination and to convey semantic contents. In traditional games the players perceive objects and properties determined by rules and play. \;
\nThis workshop follows up a seminar held in Athens 2022 with a view to develop the discussions on these issues. Among the questions we wish to explore are:
\nIs perception in virtual worlds veridical? Is it appropriate to talk of perception in virtual worlds?
\nDo we perceive game properties?
\nHow should we understand subjectivity and perception mediated by avatars?
\nHow do cultural and ideological frames shape perceptual experience?
\nHow does the reality status of objects and properties affect the characterization of perceptual content?
\nWhat are the phenomenal characteristics of gaming experiences?
\nHow is narrative\, fictional worlds and gaming structured around perceptual states?
\nHow is imagination\, make-believe and fantasy related to perception in games?
\nHow are perceptual schema like space\, time\, objecthood and modality utilized in gaming?
\nWhat is the relationship between inference and perceptual content in games?
\nHow do we perceive affordances in games?
\nCan the perceptual content of games be analyzed as &ldquo\;seeing as&rdquo\;?
\nWhat are the phenomenal characteristics of perceptual experiences that are distinctive to ludic environments?
\nHow should we characterize the consciousness that accompanies perception of games and virtual environments?
\nContributions from different scholarly approaches are welcome\, such as game studies\, cognitive science\, enactivist perception theory\, phenomenology\, fiction theory\, media philosophy\, and classic philosophies of perception.
\nPlease submit an abstract (max 1000 characters) in this form:https://forms.gle/3fc8uDEQw8GJwfxy5and send a copy to perceptioningames@gmail.com by April 11. \; We welcome both full papers and more conjectural presentations. \; We highly appreciate presentations that can be submitted as papers to theJournal of the Philosophy of Games\, but the participants are free to publish their work where they want. \; There will be a small fee (ca 40 euro) to cover rent for the seminar room.
