DESCRIPTION:
The relationship between war and peace is complex and uneasy. Sometimes\, war and peace are understood as opposites &ndash\; war is bad and peace is good\, war is destructive and peace is constructive. Sometimes\, the relationship between the two is seen as much more sympathetic\, such as when we justify going to war so that we might have peace. War is seen\, then\, not the opposite of peace\, but a means of producing peace. The relationship between war and peace has become even more fraught\, in the age of forever wars\, and stands in even greater need of examination and theorization.
\n
We invite submissions for an interdisciplinary symposium\, which will bring together academics from the humanities and social sciences to present new scholarship on how to achieve and maintain peace in the age of forever wars. The hope is to reexamine old frameworks and to bring to light new ones\, to understand more deeply the core questions of peace and conflict in historical and transnational context. The symposium is organized under the auspices of Temple&rsquo\;s Center for the Study of Force and Diplomacy (CENFAD). We will cover the cost of travel and accommodations for all participants.
\n
Questions of interest may include:
\n
-&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; What is the aim of forever wars? Can forever wars aim at or produce peace?
\n
-&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Does understanding peace require a separate and distinct framework from war?
\n
-&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Can war still be defended as a means for promoting a stable international order? For example\, as the EU pledges to increase its military spending\, should we predict a corresponding increase in stability?
\n
-&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; How does the examination of historical precedents of peace processes (both failures and successes) help us to understand what a viable peace process might look like in Israel/Gaza and in Russia/Ukraine?
\n
-&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; What are the conditions\, if any\, under which victory in war can produce peace? What are the conditions\, if any\, under which losing a war can produce peace?
\n
-&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Why has peace acquired a bad reputation &ndash\; as a weak position\, as akin to appeasement\, as utopian?
\n
-&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; What kinds of mechanisms can international law and global human rights organizations develop to promote peaceful cooperation among states?
\n

DESCRIPTION:
CLIMATE ETHICS: PROSPECTS AND RETROSPECTIVES
\n
A Workshop and Special Issue
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
The Journal of Ethics&nbsp\;will publish a special issue on Climate Ethics: Prospects and Retrospectives and seeks proposals from a wide variety of perspectives.
\n\n
Special Issue editors and workshop organizers: Prof. Kyle Fruh (Duke Kunshan University) and Dr. Marcus Hedahl (Annapolis\, Maryland).
\n\n
Climate ethics is a relatively young field\, but nonetheless a lot has changed &ndash\; both in the area and in the world &ndash\; since climate change first started showing up in philosophy discussions. Some early and highly influential entries are now 30 years old. Meanwhile\, 2024 was the first calendar year to exceed the much-discussed 1.5⁰ C increase in global average temperature over pre-industrial baselines. This special issue invites scholars to revisit early\, influential work in climate ethics\, or assess the evolution of a theme of interest in climate ethics in light of what&rsquo\;s happened in the intervening period &ndash\; in terms of advancing climate change\, in terms of evolving climate policies\, and in terms of critical response and uptake of earlier work. This special issue aims to provide a way station in the development of climate ethics\, looking back for insights in order to more productively look toward its future.
\n\n
Confirmed contributors include:
\n
\n
Stephen Gardiner
\n
Chris J. SUMMARY:NEW PERSPECTIVES ON THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF LIFE

DESCRIPTION:
In the face of the dynamic development of protobiology\, evolutionary biology\, and astrobiology\, traditional answers to questions about the origin\, evolution\, and essence of life require constant deepening and updating.&nbsp\;The question of the nature\, origin\, and dynamics of life's evolution&nbsp\;has been one of the most fascinating and yet most challenging problems facing the human intellect. Although the natural sciences provide increasingly precise data on the mechanisms of prebiotic and bioevolutionary processes\,&nbsp\;philosophy remains an indispensable tool for synthesizing this knowledge and understanding its deeper implications and worldview consequences. In an era of groundbreaking discoveries in prebiotic chemistry\, evolutionary biology\, and ongoing astrobiology research programs\, we are on the threshold of a new era in understanding the phenomenon of life. Is life merely a rare coincidence of physicochemical circumstances\, or is it an inevitable consequence of the laws governing the universe? Is the increase in biological complexity a process inherent in the structure of the universe\, or merely a statistical accident? What consequences for our worldview would the discovery of extraterrestrial organisms with completely different biochemistry have?
\n
Our goal is to&nbsp\;create a space for interdisciplinary debate that combines philosophical (and theological) perspectives with the latest achievements in the natural sciences. We want this meeting to be a catalyst for new ideas that will shed light on the ontological\, epistemological\, and methodological challenges associated with studying the phenomenon of life: its nature\, origin\, and evolution.
\n
We hope that our&nbsp\;conference will be an interdisciplinary platform for the exchange of ideas between protobiologists\, biologists\, astrobiologists\, philosophers\, and theologians\, focusing on issues such as:
\n
\n
\n
the transition from inanimate to animate matter (abiogenesis) from a natural and philosophical perspective\;
\n
\n
\n
contemporary redefinitions of the concept of &ldquo\;life&rdquo\;\;
\n
\n
\n
the philosophy of evolution and\; evolutionism: mechanisms and directions\;
\n
\n
\n
astrobiology and the cosmic perspective of life
\n
\n
\n
worldview and religious contexts of the origin and evolution of life.
\n
\n
\n
This conference is a continuation of the previous 14. editions of the conference series entitled&nbsp\;Philosophical and scientific components of the worldview\, which took place between 1997 and 2011\, and a series of publications under the same title\, in which eight volumes containing the contents of conference presentations were published.
\n
We would be honored if you would share the results of your research and join the discussion on the philosophy of the origins and evolution of life.
\n
Organizing Committee

DESCRIPTION:
The 1st Swiss PPE Conference will take place at the University of Lucerne on 3 July 2026. This student-led event brings together PPE students as well as students specializing in&nbsp\;one of the three disciplines.
\n
'Progress under Pressure' addresses what we perceive as one of the most significant and urgent challenges of our time. Progress is commonly understood as a movement towards an improved state. While there is an ongoing debate about whether humanity is continually striving towards such a state\, we nonetheless continue to use the idea of progress as a normative guideline for designing many assumptions\, models and systems. However\, the many intersecting and growing crises of our time are putting this normative principle of progress under increasing pressure. Ideas\, paradigms and methods from all three PPE fields can help us rethink the meaning of human progress and recalibrate our assumptions\, models and systems accordingly.
\n
The conference will discuss questions such as:
\n
\n
Can we still believe in progress-based models while destroying nature\, the foundation of human reproduction?&nbsp\;
\n
Can we speak of systems that lead to progress when global conflicts increase\, inequalities rise\, and democracies collapse?&nbsp\;
\n
Are we entering an era of regress &ndash\; and can we claim that certain forms of progress itself are responsible for today's crises?&nbsp\;
\n
What are the dominant narratives about progress and whom do they benefit or marginalize?
\n
What is the vision of the improved state toward which we should progress?
\n
How can philosophical perspectives clarify the meaning(s) of progress and evaluate whether assumptions\, models\, and systems align with it?
\n
How can political science reexamine whether existing institutions are still capable of managing contemporary crises &ndash\; and what reforms are necessary?
\n
How has economics tied progress to GDP growth &ndash\; and how can progress be redefined beyond it\, such as through capabilities or human flourishing?
\n
\n
We believe that PPE is not only a programme of study\, but also a way of relating to the world. It is a crossroads where multiple perspectives on various issues are given the opportunity to develop and come together\, enabling us to see the bigger picture. We hope that\, with the help of your work and ideas\, this PPE conference may contribute to this crossroads.

For questions and clarifications\, feel free to contact us via email (ppe-conference@unilu.ch).&nbsp\;
\n
Schedule
\n
Details will follow.&nbsp\;
\n
Workshops
\n
1. Rethinking progress: What is progress and development and where should it lead? Is humanity continually striving towards progress or not? How should we rethink progress particularly in relation to poverty\, developing countries and non-Western perspectives?&nbsp\;
\n
2. Systems: The intersecting and growing crises of our time increasingly expose the limits of political\, economic\, and ecological systems. In what ways are our institutions and structures (not) able to withstand this systemic stress? And what is needed to reinforce resilient systems?&nbsp\;
\n
3. Work and Meaning: Today&rsquo\;s labour market increasingly causes competition\, burnout and alienation\, while also excluding integral parts of the sphere of work such as care work. Yet\, work can also satisfy essential needs such as recognition\, meaning and self-realization. How\, then\, should progress in the sphere of work be measured?
\n
Keynotes
\n
Lisa Herzog (online)
\n
Jo Wolff (in person)&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:
Philosophy in the Wild conferences are outdoor\, low-tech events focused on fostering philosophical community and engagement. They are motivated by the idea that a shift in environment can engender a shift in perspective. Doing philosophy outside affords new relations and new avenues for thought and action. We welcome a wide range of presentation types\, including experimental presentations or other creative proposals.
\n
From July 23 to July 26\, participants will camp at the Wolf River Refuge in Langlade\, WI. Activities will include (though will not be limited to) presentations\, discussions\, and several opportunities for outdoor excursions such as hiking\, swimming\, and biking. No prior camping experience is necessary&ndash\;we welcome both first-timers and seasoned outdoorspeople.
\n
This conference will bring together professional philosophers and grassroots environmental activists\, with the aim to catalyze collaboration and to integrate environmental ethical theory with practice. We are especially excited to include an opportunity for a field trip designed to increase participant knowledge of the local socio-ecological context.
\n
The conference will be held on the banks of the Wolf River and the ancestral land of the Ojibwe and Menominee peoples. In the 1970s\, Exxon proposed a metallic-sulfide mine on the headwaters of the Wolf River. This triggered an ultimately successful state-wide coalitional resistance movement that the sociologist Al Gedicks later dubbed &ldquo\;Wisconsin&rsquo\;s Standing Rock.&rdquo\; The waters that run past our campsite flow on to the Menominee reservation\, where it becomes a nationally protected &ldquo\;Wild and Scenic&rdquo\; waterway snaking through a forest that has been logged sustainably by the Menominee for 170 years.
\n
Keynote speakers will be Anahkwet (Guy Reiter)\, Director of the Menominee Organization Menīkānaehkem\, and Cynthia Belmont\, Writer and former professor of English\, Gender &amp\; Women&rsquo\;s Studies at Northland College.
\n
Note that this is one of two Philosophy in the Wild event this year.&nbsp\;We also encourage submissions for our workshop\, "Philosophy of Academic Philosophy\," taking place at Ridley Creek State Park\, Pennsylvania\, in July.
