DESCRIPTION:Broader Impacts Webinar (10/23): How Philosophers Can Better Engage the Public\nWhat are ways in which philosophers can effectively engage public stakeholders?

How can we help philosophers with public engagement\, especially when it is inhibited by other professional duties?\nApart from teaching students\, most academic philosophers measure &ldquo\;impact&rdquo\; in terms of scholarly publications and citations. Within many modern research universities\, academics are incentivized to publish papers on a specialized topic for a small audience in &ldquo\;high impact&rdquo\; peer-reviewed journals. Despite its benefits\, this narrow view of &ldquo\;impact&rdquo\; does not necessarily nor directly contribute to public welfare and collective wellbeing (the mission of SRPoiSE). The purpose of this webinar is to identify more robust models and exemplars of publicly engaged philosophy\, particularly related to science\, engineering\, and technology. This webinar will include an array of philosophers of science who have engaged publics in different capacities:\n&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Sabina Leonelli (Technical University of Munich) &ldquo\;Making Science Public: The Experience of the TUM Public Science Lab&rdquo\;\n&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Sarah Richardson (Harvard University) &ldquo\;The Art of the Plain-Language Explainer: Examples from the GenderSci Lab&rdquo\;\n&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Melissa Jacquart (University of Cincinnati) "Teaching Graduate Students How to Do Effective Public Engagement"\n&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Kyle Whyte (University of Michigan) &ldquo\;How Philosophers Influence Federal Governments: From Grassroots Organizing to Scholarly Advisement&rdquo\;\nIt is hosted and sponsored by the Consortium for Socially Relevant Philosophy of/in Science and Engineering (SRPOiSE) and the Ann Johnson Institute at the University of South Carolina.
