DESCRIPTION:
Until recently\, there was a general assumption that fascism had been decisively defeated\, because the horrors of WWII seemed to have left fascism morally bankrupt and politically untenable. Yet\, in the early twenty-first century\, the spectre of fascism has resurfaced. This re-emergence should not be understood as a simple repetition of the 1930s\, but rather as the mutation of fascist tendencies into contemporary conditions.&nbsp\; One of its defining features is the appropriation of democracy itself. Across different contexts\, authoritarian movements have risen to power through electoral means\, exploiting popular discontent with mainstream politics and using democratic institutions to advance illiberal agendas. Their rhetoric frequently invokes a narrative of national rebirth\, the restoration of a lost &lsquo\;greatness\,&rsquo\; and the reclamation of sovereignty from &lsquo\;corrupt elites\,&rsquo\; &lsquo\;globalists\,&rsquo\; and &lsquo\;dangerous outsiders.&rsquo\; Furthermore\, contemporary fascism permeates everyday life\, normalizing misogyny\, homophobia\, and racism\, and fostering an atmosphere in which authoritarianism appears desirable or inevitable. Its resurgence is closely tied to the expansion of digital media\, which accelerates the spread of conspiracy theories\, hate speech\, and extremist propaganda. Online platforms serve not only as organizational hubs but also as aesthetic arenas where fascist symbols are repackaged in playful or subcultural styles\, obscuring their violent and destructive implications.
\n
While the ways through which fascism is currently expressed are becoming increasingly visible\, the causes of its re-emergence are more complex\, and so are the challenges they pose to theory. Max Horkheimer famously said that &lsquo\;Whoever is not willing to talk about capitalism should also keep quiet about fascism&rsquo\;\, implying that fascism is always in the background everywhere where capitalism reigns and it intensifies when capitalist realities become unbearable. In this sense\, globalisation and neoliberalism have produced widening inequalities\, labour precarity\, and a pervasive sense of uncertainty and dislocation &mdash\; fertile ground for fascist narratives that promise security\, belonging\, and stability. Yet the Marxist tradition sustained a robust critique of capitalism during the decades of emergence of neoliberalism and globalisation &mdash\; decades in which fascism was widely considered defeated &mdash\;&nbsp\; but this alone did not prevent its resurgence. Understanding fascism&rsquo\;s reappearance therefore requires a more expansive analysis of its ideological complexity\, attending not only to its entanglement with capital\, but also to race\, gender\, nation\, and empire. At the same time\, as Theodor W. Adorno observed\, fascism possesses an &lsquo\;intrinsically untheoretical nature.&rsquo\; For this reason\, the premise of this Lisbon Praxis Summer School is that fascism&rsquo\;s conditions of emergence and its ways of operating can &mdash\; and must &mdash\; be grasped through renewed critical resources.
\n
With the aim of mobilising Critical Theory&rsquo\;s analytical and explanatory force to understand the contemporary resurgence of fascism and to explore possibilities for its eradication\, the Lisbon Praxis Summer School 2026 will address the following clusters of questions:
\n
\n
What is fascism\, and how does Critical Theory conceptualize it? What are the continuities and ruptures between the early Frankfurt School&rsquo\;s critique of fascism and contemporary Critical Theory&rsquo\;s approaches to fascism? Can fascism be grasped otherwise than through critique\, or critique is the only way of depicting it\, while other theoretical approaches risk being contaminated by it? What\, precisely\, is the object of critique in critique of fascism? Why does capitalism tend to prevail as the primary target of critique of fascism\, while empire and colonialism remain a more tangential target?
\n
\n
\n
In what ways do contemporary fascist movements resemble or differ from historical fascism?&nbsp\; Is there a fascist rationality expressed across different historical contexts? How can the current global spread of fascism coexist with the processes of racialization and exclusion that fascism itself enacts? How do climate crisis\, migration\, and bio-politics intersect with new fascist imaginaries? How do gender\, masculinity\, and sexuality function in contemporary fascist fantasies? How do digital platforms reshape fascist mobilization and community-building? How does datafication\, surveillance\, and algorithmic governance produce new fascist tendencies?
\n
\n
\n
Is contemporary fascism still best understood as a symptom of capitalism&rsquo\;s recurring crises\, or has it become an operative modality of contemporary capitalism itself? How does global capital intersect with &mdash\; and potentially facilitate &mdash\; the worldwide proliferation of fascist movements and regimes? What role do class interests play in the rise of fascist regimes? How do fears of globality and conspiracy theories contribute to the global emergence of fascism?&nbsp\; Can fascism be understood as a capitalist self-defense mechanism? Can liberal institutions coexist with fascistic practices\, or is fascism inherently illiberal?
\n
\n
\n
What can Critical Theory do about fascism? What warning signs does Critical Theory offer for recognizing fascism early? How should we conceptualize resistance to fascism today? In what ways can feminism\, anti-racism\, and anti-colonial thought help us analyze and resist fascist tendencies? What are the philosophical and political foundations of anti-fascist thought\, how have these evolved historically\, and what challenges do they face in the present?
\n
\n
To apply for participation\, graduate students and early career scholars are invited to submit a research statement reflecting their research interests in connection to the questions above and/or the following themes:
\n
\n
\n
\n
Frankfurt School&rsquo\;s Critical Theory of fascism
\n
Methods of a Critical Theory of fascism
\n
Fascism and political economy/political economy of fascism
\n
Fascism and gender: anti-feminism and crises of masculinity
\n
Fascism and technology/fascism of platforms and algorithms
\n
Intersections of fascism with racism\, coloniality\, and class
\n
Fascism and polycrisis: economic\, ecological\, democratic &hellip\;
\n
Fascism and capitalism: neoliberalism\, financialization\, and austerity
\n
The philosophical and political foundations of anti-fascist thought and resistance
\n
\n
\n\n
Please submit your research statement and a short bio through the application form.
\n

SUMMARY:Phenomenologies of Unique Value (Duquesne Studies in Phenomenology)

DESCRIPTION:
Duquesne Studies in Phenomenology
Special Issue: Phenomenologies of Unique Value
\n
Editor-in-Chief:
Dr. Jeffrey McCurry (Duquesne University\, Director of the Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center)
\n
Issue Editors:
Dr. Eric J. Mohr (Saint Vincent College)
Dr. Sarah Borden Sharkey (Wheaton College)
\n
If it is the case that each individual person is unique\, then a related question is whether individuality implies a unique value of individuals. Does every individual have some distinctive value in their own right? And if so\, what sort of value is it\, what is its source\, and what is its evidence? The idea relates to both historical and contemporary philosophical contexts related to personal identity\, philosophical anthropology\, personalism\, value theory\, and ethical (and meta-ethical) considerations.&nbsp\;
\n
We invite scholars to submit abstracts taking a phenomenological approach to the question of the unique value that persons potentially possess as individuals and areas related to this question\, both supporting and critical perspectives.&nbsp\;
\n
Historically\, Kant&nbsp\;claimed that what it means that persons possess dignity is to possess irreplaceable value or incomparable worth that &ldquo\;does not admit of an equivalent.&rdquo\; Later\, Scheler challenges Kantian &ldquo\;personalism&rdquo\; as failing to account for personal individuality and the &ldquo\;individual value-essence.&rdquo\; Scheler&rsquo\;s work was influential for twentieth-century personalism generally\, including the work of Edith Stein\, Emmanuel Mounier\, Jose Ortega y Gasset\, and Karol Wojtyla (John Paul II).&nbsp\;
\n
While the personalist tradition in phenomenology is a key area\, we are interested in submissions drawing from the whole phenomenological tradition broadly\, and treatments that offer phenomenological engagement with non-phenomenological thinkers.&nbsp\;
\n
Some contemporary philosophers\, outside of the phenomenological tradition\, have taken up this theme in different ways. Certain analytic value theorists have given attention to the notion of &ldquo\;irreplaceable value&rdquo\; as a type of &ldquo\;intrinsic value&rdquo\; (e.g. G. Bradford\, C. Gowans\, A Kadlac\, E. H. Matthes\, etc.). Others consider connections between unique value and love (e.g.\, C. Grau\, A. Iacona\, N. Kolodny\, N. Kreft\, J. D. Velleman\, etc.)\, for example\, with respect to the idea of &ldquo\;attachment&rdquo\; and its relation to value (e.g.\, J. Raz). Linda Zagzebski has written exploratory pieces on the &ldquo\;value of uniqueness&rdquo\; in relation to dignity. And Rebecca Newberger Goldstein has a book (2026) on the adjacent idea of &ldquo\;mattering.&rdquo\; Contributors are welcome to engage with aspects of this scholarship in relation to phenomenology.&nbsp\;
\n
The deadline for abstract submission is April 19\, 2026
\n
Submission Guidelines:
\n
\n
Submit only abstracts at this time.
\n
Abstracts should be approximately 300 words.
\n
Final papers should be approximately 6000-8000 words.
\n
Citations should adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style.
\n
Send submissions to both sarah.borden@wheaton.edu and eric.mohr@stvincent.edu.
\n
\n
Important Dates:
\n
\n
Abstracts are due by&nbsp\;April 19\, 2026.
\n
Decisions on abstracts will be made by May 1\, 2026.
\n
Full submissions are due by February 1\, 2027.
\n

DESCRIPTION:
During the first decades of the twenty-first century\, the term &ldquo\;Anthropocene&rdquo\; has been popularized as a title for the contemporary era in which the influence of human behavior on Earth&rsquo\;s geology\, climate\, and ecosystems has become\, in an unprecedented way\, a planetary force of change. This title encompasses some of the most pressing challenges that humanity faces today\, including intensifying climate change and its effects on the natural environment and the habitat of humans and nonhumans\, loss of biodiversity\, and other profound changes in the biogeography of the planet. On a more philosophical level\, the concept of the Anthropocene points to what can be seen as an ongoing deep transformation in our understanding of the relationship between humanity\, technology\, and nature\, and in the very self-understanding of humanity. While it remains a debated term without a simple and unequivocal definition and chronology\, the Anthropocene is increasingly seen in a variety of academic fields\, from the natural and biosciences to the humanities and social sciences\, as a topic that researchers and scholars are called upon to address using the methods and approaches of their respective disciplines. Phenomenology\, in its various theoretical and applied forms\, is no exception&mdash\;it is also working to confront and articulate this overarching question of our time.
\n
We invite abstracts for papers in phenomenology and related areas of philosophy and theoretical and empirical research. This year we especially encourage submissions that reflect upon and advance phenomenology&rsquo\;s approach to the topic of the Anthropocene\, understood in a wide sense as including a host of contemporary phenomena that characterize humanity&rsquo\;s relationship to the natural environment and the nonhuman. Questions to be addressed include\, but are not limited to\, the following:
\n
\n
What resources can phenomenology offer&mdash\;either by itself or in an interdisciplinary collaboration with other fields and approaches&mdash\;to theoretical and practical attempts to address the key phenomena of the Anthropocene and their implications?
\n
What resources can phenomenology offer for articulating the self-understanding of humanity and its encounter with the natural environment and nonhuman species in the face of the immense contemporary environmental challenges?
\n
How can and does phenomenology contribute to environmental thinking and the philosophy of technology\, and how has it done so in the past?
\n
What is the nature\, scope\, and purpose of ecophenomenology as a distinct field of study?
\n
What are phenomenological ways of dealing with contemporary trends challenging traditional humanism and anthropocentrism\, such as posthumanism and transhumanism\, or new forms of materialism and realism?
\n

DESCRIPTION:
The Centre for the Study of Theory and Criticism at Western University is pleased to announce our in-person 2026 Annual Theory Conference\, an event that will also commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Theory Centre. The Conference will take place from Thursday\, April 23 - Friday\, April 24 2026.
\n
The theoretical objective of the conference is twofold. Our first objective is centered around the ceremonious occasion of the CSTC&rsquo\;s 40th anniversary. This occasion allows us to foreground theory as an intellectual tradition and academic practice that has shaped the Canadian university. This comes at a critical time when the programs of the humanities and social sciences within the university are being challenged across the country by austere policies and ideologies that have increasingly favoured more practical (or profitable) disciplines. This poses the broader question of the university&rsquo\;s role as a public institution\, as well as the function that it ought to play in contributing to broader social goods such as culture\, aesthetics\, and democracy.
\n
Our second objective is centered around the problematic of Canadian identity. Building off our first objective\, this conference aims to provide a ground for theorists and critical scholars to consider theory&rsquo\;s role in shaping the various institutions that affect Canadian identity. This comes at a time when the question of national identity has taken center stage within political discourse and has been continuously leveraged by power players to achieve political outcomes within Canada. In posing this question\, our conference aims to establish space for critical theory to engage with the public discourse in ways that are both nationally situated and generative of a Canadian intellectual tradition not necessarily tied to national frameworks.
\n

Possible topics may include\, but are not limited to:
\n
● The role of theory within/outside the university
\n
○ Theory as praxis\; theory and hegemony
\n
○ The question of theory and practice
\n
○ The Canadian intellectual tradition (Canada&rsquo\;s successes and failures)
\n
● The commodification of the university
\n
○ Historically contingent vs structurally necessary
\n
○ The division of disciplines and the defunding of the humanities
\n
○ Democracy and Capitalism\, the University as a site of struggle
\n
● The question of Canadian Identity
\n
○ Canadian self-conception: One or many or (no) Canadas?
\n
○ Literature and Canadian Identity (e.g.\, Frye&rsquo\;s &lsquo\;garrison mentality&rsquo\;\; Atwood&rsquo\;s &lsquo\;Survival&rsquo\;)
\n
○ Negation of Americanism\; Canadian identity in an era of declining American hegemony
\n
○ Mosaic vs. Melting Pot\; Cultural Diversity vs. Cultural Difference (immigration and the Canadian University)
\n
○ Localized cultural identities
\n
○ Theory\, Indigenous Sovereignty and Decolonization
\n
○ Does Canada have a national question?

\n
The Annual Theory Conference endeavours to cultivate a forum for diverse engagement from graduate students and scholars with a broad range of backgrounds and approaches. This year we are seeking submissions across the humanities and social sciences that deal critically and theoretically with problems related to the university and national identity in a Canadian context.
\n
Submission Instructions:
\n
Submissions will undergo anonymous review. DESCRIPTION:
We seek papers that interrogate the way modern digital technology enhances\, hampers\, or alters our experience of our lived worlds.
\n\n
The distinction between &ldquo\;being on the internet&rdquo\; and &ldquo\;being in the real world&rdquo\; is eroding. People can increasingly be said to &ldquo\;live on their phones&rdquo\; or other devices. This workshop aims to interrogate the meaning and structure of the world and the self as mediated by such devices.
\n\n
This year\, we are especially interested in papers concerned the problem of embodiment in digital worlds and digital art practices\, with a particular focus on how philosophy can engage with and draw lessons from contemporary artistic practices. By thematizing the workshop around embodiment\, the aim is twofold: to advance a burgeoning\, interdisciplinary discussion about the challenges and innovative possibilities of 're-locating' human embodied experience and practice within the digital domain\, and to arrive at a robust\, systematic understanding of just what such a relocation supposes and entails - is there indeed anything such as 'digital embodiment' at all?
\n\n\n
The purpose of this workshop is to collaboratively develop works-in-progress with an eye toward publication. This is a pre-read workshop with each paper having a designated commenter to lead the conversation\, rather than formal conference presentations
\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:
We are pleased to announce that the next annual meeting of The Kristeva Circle will be held at the University at Buffalo\, SUNY\, on October 23-24\, 2026.&nbsp\;
\n
The Kristeva Circle meeting is an international conference that advances scholarship on\, or influenced by\, philosopher\, psychoanalyst\, and novelist Julia Kristeva. The two-day conference will host a variety of speakers from the United States and abroad.&nbsp\;
\n
In its 11th iteration\, the theme of the 2026 conference will broadly focus on embodiment. However\, given the tenant of the work of this year&rsquo\;s two keynote speakers we&nbsp\;encourage submissions that address the work of Julia Kristeva in relation to disability\, gender\, sexuality\, and race.
\n
We are delighted to share that we have two keynote speakers confirmed for this year&rsquo\;s conference. They are as follows:&nbsp\;
\n
\n
&nbsp\;David Marriott is the Charles T. Winship Professor of Philosophy at Emory University. He works broadly on Comparative Francophone Caribbean Literature and Literary theory\, psychoanalysis\, Black cultural theory and philosophies of race\, literary and visual cultures of modernism.&nbsp\;
\n
Melinda C. Hall is Director of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Central Florida. Dr. Hall&rsquo\;s research specialties are philosophy of disability\, Continental philosophy\, and bioethics.&nbsp\;
\n
\n
&nbsp\;We are seeking abstracts that develop the work of Julia Kristeva\, with preference given to submissions that address embodiment broadly construed\, and more specifically disability\, gender\, sexuality\, and/or race.
\n
&nbsp\;Please submit abstracts of 500 words\, prepared for anonymous review\, by April 30\, 2026\, to kristevacircle@gmail.com. In a separate document\, include a short author bio with contact info. For more information on the conference\, please write to the local host\, Elisabeth Paquette\, at epaquette@buffalo.edu.

SUMMARY:Continental Philosophy of Action

DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this two-day international conference is to explore\, clarify and apply the resources of Continental thought about action and agency. Philosophy of action in the analytic tradition\, while not immune from internal disagreements\, can be thought of as a more-or-less coherent philosophical subfield. While there are exceptions\, Anglo-American philosophers of action tend to share metaphysical commitments (regarding event-causality\, for example\, or the existence of representational mental states)\, canonical references (Anscombe\, Davidson\, Bratman\, et al.)\, and sets of problems regarding action (eg\, &ldquo\;causal deviance&rdquo\;\, the so-called &ldquo\;disappearing agent&rdquo\; problem\, intentional omissions\, etc.). This situation can be&nbsp\;&nbsp\;prima facie&nbsp\;&nbsp\;contrasted to the scattered and varied approaches to action and agency one finds in the Continental philosophical tradition. Idealism\, Phenomenology\, hermeneutics\, poststructuralism\, new materialisms\, and critical theory\, to name just a few currents in contemporary Continental thought\, are distinguished from one another by seemingly distinct sets of philosophical concerns and vocabularies\, and by diverse metaphysical and methodological commitments. Given the treatment of action and agency in each of these currents is inseparable from specific sets of philosophical concerns and commitments\, it can seem that Continental philosophers do not share enough common ground to talk together about action and agency without talking past one another. In part\, then\, this conference wishes to clarify the extent to which one could meaningfully speak of &ldquo\;Continental philosophy of action.&rdquo\; But also\, working back down from these high-level\, general concerns\, the conference wishes to focus on specific\, field-defining problems of action and agency\, and the resources that might be drawn from Continental thought to address these problems in novel ways. Possible topics of interest might thus include:
\n
\n
To what extent can different currents in Continental philosophy be said to share general\, or perhaps overlapping\, concerns regarding action?
\n
What concerns can Continental philosophy/philosophers of action be said to share with Anglo-American philosophy/philosophers of action?
\n
Can some of the open problems in Anglo-American philosophy of action be addressed by Continental philosophy/philosophers of action?
\n
What is the price of Continental &ldquo\;solutions&rdquo\; to problems in Anglo-American philosophy of action\, in terms of the new concerns\, or new metaphysical and methodological commitments\, that would need to be taken on?
\n
Has Continental philosophy identified action-problems that have yet to be noticed or adequately dealt with in the Analytic tradition\, and how might they be addressed?
\n
How have specific Continental approaches or thinkers conceptualized the question of agency and action and why does this continue to have relevance?
\n
\n
Format: Speakers will have 20 minutes to present their paper\, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion.&nbsp\;Those interested in participating should send a 400-word abstract to cpa@ucm.es by 30 April\, 2026. The conference will be in English and attendance is free.&nbsp\;More information can be found at:&nbsp\;https://eventos.ucm.es/144182/detail/continental-philosophy-of-action-international-conference.html&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
\n
Conference organizers: Emma Ingala\, Gavin Rae (Complutense University of Madrid) and Sean Bowden (Deakin University\, Australia).&nbsp\;

On one hand\, the Other is set in a position counteracting the Self\, while still remaining an essential part of the constitution of the Self. &nbsp\;As Husserl showed in&nbsp\;Cartesian Meditations\,&nbsp\;&nbsp\;eliminating the Other from one&rsquo\;s experience would make the constitution of experience impossible.&nbsp\;
\n
Empathy&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;pairing&nbsp\;are always at play in the constitution of the&nbsp\;alter ego.&nbsp\;Even within mere perception\, the alter ego is operating\, and therein\, the intersubjective sphere is essential both for the constitution of the Self\, and to perceive an object as the Self. The Self cannot be understood without intersubjectivity\, but\, on the other hand\, it is through the sense of alienness (Fremdheit) and inaccessibility of the Other\, a teleological structure of striving comes into play. Not only is the experience of the Other alien and foreign\, but it also initiates a change of perspective in how one sees oneself and the world through setting a teleological regulative idea to be strived for. The experience of the Other enables one to view oneself in a completely new light. This new understanding of the Self\, in turn\, opens up a new horizon\, changing the way everything appears. In short\, the Other serves as the means for self-reflection and revelation of the structure of experience itself. The phenomenology of Otherness is important for the studies of the Lifeworld\, the Homeworld\, and the Alienworld\, as well as in the concept of the halo\, in understanding indigenous religious experience\, in the cultural approaches such as the etic vs. emic\, or in the problem of historical Otherness as means to reconstruct historical personality.
\n
We welcome various phenomenologies of Otherness: here\, the Other may refer to a human or a non-human subject\, to the Divine Person\, to any Otherness. We are interested in how the phenomenological understanding of the Other applies to contemporary forms of the Self\, e.g.\, in Girard&rsquo\;s mimesis or Lopes Corvo&rsquo\;s psychoanalytic concept of self-envy. From classical approaches in phenomenology\, such as those of Husserl\, Levinas\, Ricoeur\, or Schutz\, &nbsp\;to our contemporaries\, such as Waldenfels and Steinbock\, development of their thoughts from concrete forms of experience to situated and generalizable structures of Otherness can be covered.
\n
The abstracts must demonstrate familiarity with operative or theory-building concepts in phenomenology\, and use the framework of phenomenology with sources from within the phenomenological tradition. Possible themes regarding Otherness could be\, but are not restricted to: What role does the Other play in uncovering the structure of self-constitution? Is it possible to understand the absolute alterity\, or is a common ground necessary? Is &lsquo\;overcoming&rsquo\; Otherness even a fruitful task\, and what will this task reveal? How can a singular\, united world be referenced\, when all testimonies stem from individual perspectives? What is the difference between the Other and an object? Does the sphere of primordiality play an essential role for the research of Otherness? How does one understand the Other from an etic or emic standpoint ? Does Otherness within spirituality differ from pragmatic Otherness? How does one interpret first-person authority and Otherness in cases of cultural transfer?
\n
&nbsp\;Please send abstracts (of max. 500 words) formatted for anonymous reviewing. The abstracts must be written in English and sent to&nbsp\;conference2026@sophere.org\, and please cc to Miyuki Ono (miyuki.ono@student.kuleuven.be)\, &nbsp\;by May 15\, 2026. We will get back to you on whether your abstract has been accepted by June 5\, 2026. If you do not receive an email by this date\, please reach out to us. DESCRIPTION:
The annual conference of the North American Society for Early Phenomenology will be held at the&nbsp\;Universit&eacute\; de Montr&eacute\;al\,&nbsp\;May 28-29th. The keynote speakers are Maxime Doyon (UdeM) and Iris Laner (Mozarteum Salzburg).&nbsp\; &nbsp\; Conference Theme:&nbsp\;Varieties of Intuition in Early Phenomenology: One of the most inspiring aspects of the early phenomenological movement was its expanded notion of intuition. Breaking from models centred on sense-data and concept-application\, early phenomenologists investigated diverse forms of intuitions as intentions of presence and absence\, immediacy and mediacy\, while also reconceiving the role of norms and values in sensory consciousness. In this way\, early phenomenologists offered new orientations for investigations of perception\, aesthetic contemplation\, imagination\, memory\, empathy\, and more.&nbsp\;Relatedly\, this expansive intuitive register enabled them to produce rich descriptions of perceptual objects\, artworks\, fictional entities\, other minds\, essences\, laws\, and values.&nbsp\;NASEP welcomes papers exploring the contribution of early phenomenologists to varieties of intuition and papers illustrating how these contributions have informed more recent approaches to philosophical investigations into sensory\, aesthetic consciousness\, broadly construed.&nbsp\;We are particularly interested in papers that draw attention to thinkers and problems that have been historically neglected and/or underrepresented.
Abstracts should be&nbsp\;400-600&nbsp\;words and include a short bibliography. Abstracts must be prepared for blind review and sent to patrick.eldridge@unb.ca&nbsp\;
Deadline for submissions has been extended to&nbsp\;March 6thand decisions will be sent out no later than&nbsp\;March 16th.

DESCRIPTION:
In the wake of profound technological and cultural transformations\, cinema no longer names a stable medium but rather a shifting constellation of practices\, dispositifs\, and experiential forms. The proliferation of streaming platforms\, algorithmically curated feeds\, immersive installations\, AI-generated imagery\, VR and AR environments\, conversational agents\, and multi-screen ecologies compels us to rethink the very structures of our lived experience. Under the still-contested but heuristically productive concept of&nbsp\;&ldquo\;post-cinema\,&rdquo\; recent scholarship in film and media studies has sought to come to grips with this transformed media landscape in ways that are still waiting to be fully appropriated by phenomenological reflection.
\n
The present conference invites contributions that bring phenomenology into sustained dialogue with contemporary media theory in order to interrogate the&nbsp\;manifold facets of our current&nbsp\;post-cinematic situation&nbsp\;and map the experiential\, affective\, embodied\, and critical structures that characterize our current media ecology.
\n
Building primarily on traditions of film phenomenology associated with&nbsp\;Vivian Sobchack&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;Jean-Pierre Meunier\, and drawing on the philosophical resources of\, among others\,&nbsp\;Edmund Husserl\,&nbsp\;Martin Heidegger\,&nbsp\;Maurice Merleau-Ponty\, and&nbsp\;Jean-Paul Sartre\, as well as Emmanuel Levinas&rsquo\;s ethics of the Other\, Hermann Schmitz&rsquo\;s New Phenomenology\, Don Ihde&rsquo\;s post-phenomenology of technology\, or Mark Coeckelbergh&rsquo\;s phenomenologically informed ethics of human-robot interaction\, we aim to extend phenomenological inquiry beyond the classical cinematic dispositif toward emerging &ldquo\;families of images&rdquo\;: algorithmic visuals\, deepfakes\, TikTok feeds\, immersive environments\, AI image synthesis\, and hybrid human-machine interfaces.
\n
By bringing together philosophers\, film and media scholars\, as well as artists\, we aim to foster a rigorous interdisciplinary conversation about how phenomenology can illuminate\, and be transformed by\, the evolving media landscape.

Philosopher\, economist\, psychoanalyst\, political theorist\, and activist\, he developed a powerful and original reflection on freedom\, creation\, the institution of society\, and both individual and collective autonomy. From his younger days in Greece\, through Socialisme ou Barbarie\, to his passing\, his intellectual journey crossed and challenged disciplinary and ideological boundaries. This international conference aims to reexamine\, three decades after his death\, both the intellectual legacy of the Greek philosopher and the relevance of his conceptual tools for thinking about today&rsquo\;s society. In the face of the challenges of our time\, Castoriadis&rsquo\; thought offers valuable resources to question the very foundations of our societies\, political action\, and philosophical inquiry.
\n
Objectives
\n
This conference is neither commemorative nor hagiographic. Its purpose is to revive the radical dimensions of Castoriadian thought by engaging it with contemporary challenges\, exploring its internal tensions\, questioning its assumptions\, and envisioning its possible futures. Since elucidation was at the heart of Castoriadis&rsquo\; project of autonomy\, it will serve as the guiding force for our discussions\, thirty years later. Fundamentally\, this conference seeks to:
\n
\n
\n
Encourage renewed reading of Castoriadis across different fields of knowledge.
\n
\n
\n
Engage his thought in a dialogue with contemporary issues.
\n
\n
\n
Explore the practical uses of his work in social movements\, education\, clinical practices\, and democratic experimentation.
\n
\n
\n
Map the intellectual lineages\, as well as the productive critiques and reinterpretations of his thought\, both in France and internationally.
\n
\n
\n

\n
Thematic Areas
\n
1. Against the dominant disposition to look upon contradiction as an obstacle to absolute knowledge\, the Kyoto School recognizes contradiction as the key to unlocking the secrets of absolute totality. The Summer School will think with major thinkers of the Kyoto School on totality and contradiction. Philosophizing with Nishida\, Takahashi\, Tanabe\, Nishitani\, Ueda\, Miki\, Tosaka\, and Watsuji\, the Summer School will also explore the contemporary relevance of the Kyoto School for philosophical thought in the 21st century.

DESCRIPTION:
In January 1907\, the founder of phenomenology\,&nbsp\; Edmund Husserl\, wrote a letter to the Viennese Modernist playwright and poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal\, suggesting that the phenomenologist&rsquo\;s and the artist&rsquo\;s methods are closely connected. Husserl&rsquo\;s suggestion remains provocative to this day\, as its full implications are yet to be fully grasped. Undeniably\, for more than a century now\, the tradition of phenomenology has cleared a path for philosophy that departs from argument-centric approaches in favor of firsthand corporeal experiences rooted in the lifeworld. This also entailed suspending or &ldquo\;bracketing&rdquo\; the question of whether our metaphysical\, ethical\, or aesthetic beliefs are justified\, focusing instead on the way things appear to us: phenomenology sets aside the &ldquo\;what&rdquo\; (the mind-independent nature of things) to home in on the &ldquo\;how&rdquo\;&mdash\;the mode in which things are given in our experience.
\n
If this is a valid characterization of the phenomenological method\, it aligns it closely with the discipline of aesthetics\, as founded by A.G. Baumgarten in the 18th century. Aesthetics too\, one might argue\, predominantly leaves aside the nature of what is being depicted or expressed to focus on the &ldquo\;how&rdquo\;: on how things are presented to us by artworks or other aesthetic objects and\, correspondingly\, on what it is like to sense them in aesthetic experience. G&uuml\;nter Figal even went as far as to claim that aesthetics could never be anything but phenomenological. Be that as it may: uncontestably\, what phenomenology and aesthetics have in common is a shared interest in the &ldquo\;style&rdquo\; of appearing.
\n
Although Husserl himself hinted at this proximity in his letter to von Hofmannsthal\, his own writings on art and literature are remarkably sparse. While Husserl never wrote a formal work on aesthetics\, Jacques Derrida
\n
maintained that his thinking yields a &ldquo\;latent aesthetics.&rdquo\; This claim seems applicable to the phenomenological movement as a whole: while attempts to develop a systematic phenomenological aesthetics are surprisingly rare&mdash\;with Roman Ingarden and&nbsp\; Mikel Dufrenne as the exceptions that prove the rule &mdash\;the aesthetic dimension however takes center stage in the work of numerous other authors\, from Eugen Fink\, Jean-Paul Sartre and Maurice Merleau-Ponty through Erwin Straus\, Henri Maldiney\, and Bernhard Waldenfels. What happens\, then\, when we look at phenomenology through an aesthetic lens?
And in turn\, what is the outcome of practicing aesthetics as a kind of phenomenology?
\n
The ninth iteration of the Aesthetics &amp\; Critique workshop will address the complex and layered relationship between aesthetics and phenomenology. Topics for discussion include:
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; What does it mean to ground aesthetics in phenomenological analysis rather than other approaches? DESCRIPTION:
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
\n
Re-examining AI / Rethinking Modernity
\n
Critical philosophical\, anthropological and interdisciplinary perspectives on technology
\n
Corfu\, 22-23 October 2026
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
Conference scope
\n
In recent years\, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly transformed multiple sectors\, from healthcare and finance to education and entertainment. However\, amidst the excitement surrounding these technological developments\, it is essential to critically revisit the philosophical foundations of this plural technology and\, on this basis\, examine the societal\, ethical\, political\, economic\, and ecological challenges it presents. This conference focuses primarily on this foundational dimension and\, through such critique\, seeks to offer a deeper perspective on the notions\, assumptions\, and frameworks of modernity at large. Which modern understandings of nature\, the human\, intelligence\, imagination\, the body\, the mind\, or reason were taken for granted in the development of what is now called &ldquo\;Artificial Intelligence&rdquo\;? Have these onto-epistemological foundations proved adequate\, or have they produced problems that become visible today through the socio-political\, economic\, and ecological crises associated with AI? Also\, an anthropological lens is crucial here\, as AI exposes how culturally situated\, rather than universal\, the modern Western assumptions about the human\, reason\, and technological agency have always been.&nbsp\;By bringing these foundations into dialogue with alternative anthropologies\, including non-Western and Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies\, the conference also seeks to rethink entrenched West/East divides that structure contemporary imaginaries of both "intelligence" and technological "progress".
\n
While we wish to approach AI with a critical lens\, this conference is not grounded in technophobia or anti-AI sentiment. We recognize the transformative reality and potential of AI but we don&rsquo\;t align with neo-Luddite efforts to &ldquo\;destroy&rdquo\; or reject this technology altogether. Instead\, our aim is to foster a constructive dialogue that acknowledges AI&rsquo\;s profound influence on our lives while addressing its underlying ontological and epistemological challenges. By bringing together scholars\, researchers\, and practitioners from diverse fields\, this conference seeks to refine our understanding of AI while also identifying flaws within our current phase of modernity that become visible through the global impact of this technology.
\n
Call for papers
\n
In this context\, we invite scholars\, researchers\, and thinkers to contribute to a critical examination of Artificial Intelligence in all its forms at our upcoming Critical philosophical\, anthropological and interdisciplinary perspectives on technology international conference.
\n
We are particularly interested in papers that interrogate (but are not limited to) the following areas:
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Philosophical and Ontological Foundations of AI.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Alternative ontologies and/or epistemologies that can either stand as foundations for (a different) AI or critique current AI.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; AI and Modernity (drawing lines between modern thinkers and contemporary AI).
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Socio-Political\, Economic\, and Ecological Implications based on elements of AI that stem from ideas rooted in modernity).
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Epistemology and Knowledge Production in the Age of AI.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Constructive Critique Beyond Technophobia (grounded in renewed modern theories -Critical Theory\, Phenomenology\, Anthropology of Technology\, Bergsonian Vitalism\, etc.- or in thinkers who were previously overlooked or not typically associated with AI).
\n
This conference focuses on theoretical approaches to Artificial Intelligence and in this context\, we welcome contributions from a range of fields\, including philosophy\, anthropology\, sociology\, media studies\, and cultural theory\, but despite its theoretical orientation\, the conference also welcomes technical approaches\, as well as contributions from computer engineers\, code developers\, and other branches of informatics\, provided these approaches are situated within the broader philosophical roots of AI. Our aim is to cultivate a space for critical engagement with AI\, which\, while informed by its technical foundations\, transcends the hype and focuses on the onto-political impacts of this field of study and technology.
\n
Keynote Speakers
\n
Agostino Cera\, Associate Professor\, Humanities Department\, University of Ferrara
\n
More Keynote Speakers tba)
\n
Conference Language
\n
English
\n
Abstract submission
\n
You are kindly requested to send both your abstract (max. 300 words) and a short CV (max. 150 words) in one .doc file at: &nbsp\;aicene.research@gmail.com
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
Important Dates
\n
Abstract submission deadline: June 15\, 2026
\n
Abstract acceptance notification: July 31\, 2026
\n
Conference Program: September 2026
\n
Scientific Committee
\n
Fotini Vaki\, Associate Professor\, Department of History and Digital Humanities\, Ionian University.
\n
Konstantinos Aggelakos\, Professor\, Department of History and Digital Humanities\, Ionian University.
\n
Anna Apostolidou\, Assistant Professor\, Department of History and Digital Humanities\, Ionian University.
\n
Giannis Perperidis\, Adjunct Lecturer\, Department of History and Digital Humanities\, Ionian University.
\n

\n
Organizers
\n
Political Philosophy and Digital Technologies Laboratory\, Department of History and Digital Humanities\, Ionian University\, Greece.
\n
Research Project &ldquo\;A(I)nthropology during the Anthropocene: Hybrid research and creative pedagogy at the limits of the human&rdquo\;\, funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (2025-2028).

DESCRIPTION:
Call for Abstracts
\n
"The Phenomenology of Desire"
\n
The New Yearbook for Phenomenology and Phenomenological Philosophy&nbsp\;(Vol. XXVII)
\n
Guest Editors
Emanuela Carta (emanuela.carta@uni-graz.at)
Sara Dameno (sara.dameno@uni-koeln.de)
Alexis Delamare (alexis.delamare@ucd.ie)

About the volume
Over the past decade\, phenomenology has emerged as a central interlocutor in the philosophy of emotions\, and it is now well established that it offers distinctive resources for understanding the structure\, intentionality\, and normativity of emotional life. By contrast\, its contribution to the analysis of desire remains comparatively underdeveloped\, if not neglected. This is so even though reflections on desire can be found throughout the phenomenological tradition\, broadly understood&mdash\;from the Brentano School and early phenomenology\, including figures such as Alexius Meinong\, Christian von Ehrenfels\, Edith Stein\, Max Scheler\, and Dietrich von Hildebrand\, to later French developments\, including thinkers such as Simone de Beauvoir\, Paul Ric&oelig\;ur\, Emmanuel Levinas\, Frantz Fanon\, Jean-Luc Nancy\, and Renaud Barbaras. In addition\, recently published materials from Edmund Husserl&rsquo\;s manuscripts&mdash\;most notably the third volume of the&nbsp\;Studien zur Struktur des Bewusstseins&mdash\;offer important analyses that remain largely unexplored and invite further systematic development.

Against this background\, the volume has a twofold aim. On the one hand\, it seeks to clarify and critically examine phenomenological accounts of desire across the tradition\, from the Brentano School and early phenomenology to contemporary approaches. On the other hand\, it aims to assess how phenomenology can contribute to current debates on desire\, including its nature\, its relation to value and normativity\, its role in agency\, and its social and political dimensions. In this regard\, we especially welcome contributions that examine how desire is shaped by structures of power\, including race and coloniality\, as well as those that explore how desire can be transformed and reoriented when freed from oppressive environments. In this way\, the volume seeks to advance the philosophical understanding of desire while further developing phenomenological approaches to it.

We invite extended abstracts of approximately&nbsp\;800&ndash\;1\,000 words\, outlining the central thesis\, argumentative strategy\, and contribution to the volume.

Topics of interest&nbsp\;include\, but are not limited to:
- Phenomenological analyses of desire within specific schools or traditions (e.g.\, the Brentano School\; the Munich and G&ouml\;ttingen Circles).
- Conceptions of desire in major phenomenological figures (e.g.\, Husserl\, Levinas\, Merleau-Ponty\, de Beauvoir\, etc.).
- Desire in critical and feminist phenomenology.
- The relationship between phenomenology and psychoanalysis with respect to desire.
- Contemporary phenomenological approaches to desire.
- Possible contributions of phenomenological perspectives to contemporary debates on desire.
- Desire in underrepresented or neglected phenomenological traditions.
- Non-Western phenomenological perspectives on desire.

Submission Guidelines
To submit your abstract\, please fill in the form using the link below. DESCRIPTION:
Narration and self-narration represent a fundamental need of human beings as historical and cultural subjects. This fact has been recognised and studied in the field of anthropological\, cultural\, historical\, sociological and even psychological and philosophical research. According to various interpretative perspectives\, personal identity is constructed narratively (Bruner\, Ricoeur et al.)\, and is built at the crossroads between subjective experience and cultural transmission of a population.
\n
Personal identity\, therefore\, is not determined solely by psychological-affective development\, pure experience and knowledge of a more or less general and practical nature. A complex combination of elements nourishes the thoughts\, choices\, interests and behaviours of individuals\, rooted in the cultural values\, beliefs\, memory and history of a population.
\n
This\, explains\, on the one hand\, the civilising and emancipatory function of studies and research in the humanities and historical-social sciences for individuals\, peoples and communities\; on the other hand\, it explains the particular difficulty in achieving full and scientific knowledge of facts\, events and experiences. On the one hand\, the question of the objectivity of truth is dialectically linked both to the question of the representation of knowledge and to the question of the correspondence between statements and actual state of things. On the other hand\, the same issue enters into dialectic with the question of persuasion and knowledge interests.
\n
In particular\, the relationship between truth and persuasion\, between argumentative validity and communicative effectiveness\, is a source of tension and controversy. The matrix is clearly Western and has its roots in ancient thought (one can consider Aristotle&rsquo\;s distinction between rhetoric and dialectic\, or reconsider Socrates and Plato&rsquo\;s lessons or Sophists&rsquo\; perspective\, etc.). This is a critical area where the difference between convincing and persuading\, between knowing and believing\, between demonstrative discourse and discourse aimed at obtaining the consent of an audience generates\, in various ways\, tension and controversy that is as much scientific and cultural as it is political and social. On the one hand\, the multiplication of communication channels\, accessibility to social media\, the strengthening of the so-called &ldquo\;infosphere&rdquo\; and the advent of generative AI\; on the other\, the proliferation of economic and political conflicts of interests behind scientific research\, knowledge and communication &ndash\; all this seems to have further dramatised and complicated the critical issues and problems in question.
\n
However\, as numerous studies in different disciplinary field have shown\, the issue of persuasion cannot be addressed solely in the contexts of mass communication\, economic interests and political manipulation: no discursive practice is free from presuppositions and more or less conscious exercises and effects of persuasion (Perelman\, Habermas\, Toulmin et al.). The structures of persuasive discourse are transversally present in all linguistic practices\, including specialists&rsquo\; ones\, inspired by criteria of scientific rigour. The scientific-cultural universe cannot therefore be divided into two clearly separate areas: on the one hand\, the area of certain\, experimentally proven truth\, the domain of analytical reason\; on the other\, the area of relative truth\, the domain of the humanities and of a reason conditioned by pragmatic\, historical motivations\, i.e. anchored to a particular Lebensform.
\n
This situation reinforces the need for clarification of the relationship between truth and persuasion in the humanities and historical-social sciences\, and for rigorous analysis and discussion of the possibilities and limitations of persuasive practice\, beliefs\, cultural affiliations\, interests and values reflected in them.
\n
The conference aims to promote an interdisciplinary exchange &ndash\; including a critical discussion of case studies &ndash\; between philosophical and non-philosophical research areas\, with a particular (but not exclusive) focus on the following issues\, which are grouped around the main question &ldquo\;Narration and Renarration of Facts: How and When Is the Truth?&rdquo\;:
\n\n
- the relationship between truth and persuasion
\n
- the relationship between truth and communication
\n
- the relationship between truth and the languages of politics
\n
- the relationship between knowledge and representation
\n
- the relationship between knowledge and interest
\n
- the relationship between knowledge and cultural belonging
\n
- the relationship between knowledge and ideology
\n
- the relationship between identity and (re-)narration
\n
- the relationship between factuality and communicative distortion
\n\n
Organiser: Prof. Milenko Bodin (University of Belgrade)
\n\n
Submissions of a long abstract (of no more than 1000 words) and a CV are due by 30 June 2026.
\n
All applicants must indicate the following details: Name\, presentation title\, institutional affiliation\, and contact information.
\n
Please\, send your abstract and CV to: filcentar@gmail.com
\n\n
Applicants will be notified by 15 July 2026.

DESCRIPTION:
Call for applications: Deadline extended to March 1 2026
\n
Collegium&nbsp\;Phaenomenologicum&nbsp\;2026:&nbsp\;Climate Philosophy in the Capitalocene
\n
The theme for the Collegium Phaenomenologicum 2026 is climate philosophy in the anthropocene.&nbsp\;Climate philosophy responds to environmental destabilization by discussing climate temporalities and spatialities\, eco-politics\, climate justice\, climate affects\, and the ethical and political reorientations demanded by climate change. Climate philosophy also rethinks climate\, partly in response to global heating\, as world in the phenomenological sense and as history and habitat of life on earth. The Capitalocene references the Anthropocene dominated by colonial capitalism and its uneven and ongoing histories. In the first week\, we will question\, in discussion with phenomenology and climate science\, how the temporal framing of climate change is narrated. The second week moves the focus to space by exploring\, principally in conversation with deconstruction and French philosophy more broadly\, how climate change alters the sense of world beyond globalization. The final week&rsquo\;s course draws on eco-marxism\, bio-politics\, and eco-feminism to propose a fundamental rethinking of the political at the end of the world.
\n
The Collegium runs from July 6th to 24th\, 2026\, preceded by the participants' conference on July&nbsp\;4th and 5th.&nbsp\;The deadline to apply has been extended to March 1\, 2026\, and&nbsp\;we welcome applications from within philosophy and related disciplines concerned with the overarching theme.&nbsp\;
\n
Further details of the topic and the lecturers\, abstracts for each of the three courses\, and application forms are available on the website at
\n
https://collegiumphaenomenologicum.org/&nbsp\;
\n
For all enquiries contact:
\n
Matthias Fritsch (director)&nbsp\;matthias.fritsch@concordia.ca
\n
Rebecca van der Post (graduate assistant)&nbsp\;graduateassistant2026@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Phenomenological Anthropologies and Forms of the Human
UID:20260418T154942Z-iCalPlugin-Grails@philevents-web-f5d4878dd-dnjxp
TZID:Europe/London
DESCRIPTION:
In the context of contemporary phenomenology\, the issue of anthropology reappears as an irreducible problem to definitions\, closed typologies\, or normative models of the human being.&nbsp\;From Husserl to contemporary phenomenologies\, the human being manifests a mode of appearing that occurs in the world\, in the body\, in affectivity\, in relation to the other\, in finitude\, in historicity\, and in openness to what exceeds it. In this sense\, the human phenomenon compels us to think of anthropology without essentialisation\, attentive to donation\, to the event\, to original passivity\, to exposure\, and to the distance the subject maintains from itself.
\n
This dossier invites scientific articles that critically address phenomenological anthropologies\, understood as attempts to think about the human from its mode of appearing\, rather than from a prior definition. The focus is particularly on exploring how the human phenomenon exceeds the classical horizon of philosophical anthropology and opens possibilities for understanding the human being as one who gives itself in encounter\, who is constituted in relation\, who discovers itself thrown\, affected\, exposed\, called\, or received.
\n
Contributions are expected to engage\, among others\, with issues such as:
\n
\n
\n
the impossibility or necessity of an anthropology without essentialist definition
\n
\n
\n
the status of the lived body and flesh
\n
\n
\n
donation\, passivity\, and receptivity as anthropological keys
\n
\n
\n
alterity\, intersubjectivity\, and encounter
\n
\n
\n
finitude\, affectivity\, and vulnerability
\n
\n
\n
the event and its impact on understanding the human
\n
\n
\n
the relationship between anthropology\, phenomenology\, and hermeneutics
\n
\n
\n
tensions between subjectivity\, ipseity\, and the decentring of the self
\n
\n
\n
Articles may engage with classical and contemporary authors of the phenomenological tradition\, such as Husserl\, Scheler\, Stein\, Plessner\, Gehlen\, Heidegger\, Merleau-Ponty\, Levinas\, Marcel\, Ric&oelig\;ur\, Henry\, Marion\, Dastur\, Falque\, Lacoste\, Waldenfels\, Serban\, Depraz\, Mensch\, Zahavi\, among others\, as well as with current debates surrounding the very possibility of a phenomenological anthropology.
\n
The dossier will be published in Mutatis Mutandis: International Journal of Philosophy.
\n

DESCRIPTION:
Feminism gives us a vision\, a framework\, and tools to upend systems. One of those systems is how we think of language and the self. Is it possible to say what is true\, when stories are always already framed by the world in which they take place? What role does autofiction play in our own lives\, in the process of resistance\, in the call for that which remains invisible? The poetic attention inherent in autofiction\, in escreviv&ecirc\;ncia\, that is inherent in the work\, is created for and by and to address the necessity of the impossible. Autofiction as an act of God\, of the transcendent that manifests itself in the real\, in lived experience\, and as such is aimed at resisting the patriarchy.
\n
In this symposium we aim to bring together people with whom this theme resonates\, and we ask people to share from their own life\, practise\, profession\, in order to create an ongoing conversation as a way to build resilience. We explicitly invite people to embrace the difference they bring in to contribute towards this shared endeavour.&nbsp\;
\n
Autofiction as Resistance as a method
\n
During this week we aim to work together on exploring the themes that are central to this circle also in the way we participate. We explicitly invite people to share their insights\, artistic practises and theoretic understanding in a way that invites collaborative thinking. For this reason academic presentations are not accepted\, although a presentation can be a part of a larger workshop. Please indicate in your application how much time you would need for your intervention\, and a brief description on how you aim to use the time allotted to your session. First-time experiments are as welcome as tested concepts.&nbsp\;
\n
Participants without workshops/sharing of their own personal project/ideas are also most welcome to collaborate during the week in the interactive program.&nbsp\;
\n
About Nordic Summer University (NSU):
\n
NSU is a space for collaboration between disciplines/peoples/ideas. During the Summer Session several study circles\, each hosting their own program\, will come together &ndash\; participants are welcome to join different circles/programmes during the week. NSU is a horizontal organisation\, being present means you are a member and part of the organisation.
\n
Costs
\n
NSU offers a limited amount of grants and scholarships. If you are interested in receiving one (which means a reduced participation fee of only 100 euro for the whole week)\, please let us know while applying.&nbsp\;
\n
\n
100 euros Scholarship (in shared 4-bed rooms with shared bathroom)
\n
1250 euros Institutional price/any room type
\n
900 euros Institutional price PhD/any room type
\n
950 euros Single room
\n
700 euros Bed in double room
\n
1000 euros Double room 1 adult 1 child
\n
1200 euros Family room 1 adult 2 children
\n
1800 euros Family room 2 adults 2 children
\n
1500 euros Family room 2 adults 1 child
\n
500 euros Camping&nbsp\;
\n
\n
This includes&nbsp\;accommodation and all meals for the full week. DESCRIPTION:
International Conference
\n
Phenomenology and the Political:
\n
Experience\, Power\, and Methods
\n
2-3 December 2026
\n
University of Beira Interior
\n
(Covilh&atilde\;\, Portugal)
\n
Confirmed Speakers:
\n
Thomas Bedorf (Hagen)
\n
Frank Chouraqui (Leiden)
\n
Steffen Herrmann (Hagen)
\n
Mariana Larison (Buenos Aires)
\n
Ricardo Mendoza-Canales (Lisbon)
\n
Delia Popa (Vilanova)
\n
The relationship between phenomenology and politics has long been complex and contested. While Husserl famously positioned phenomenology as a rigorous science of essences\, focused on the structures of consciousness and the epoch&eacute\;\, he also emphasized the inseparability of experience from its temporal\, cultural\, and historical horizons. His methodological rigor has often been interpreted as apolitical\, privileging descriptive clarity over engagement with collective life. Subsequent phenomenologists&mdash\;ranging from Merleau-Ponty\, Sartre\, and Arendt to Fanon\, Young\, Levinas\, Butler\, Schutz\, and Derrida&mdash\;have demonstrated that these structures of meaning\, intersubjectivity\, and experience carry profound political implications. Their work shows that politics is not only enacted in institutions but lived\, embodied\, and experienced\, and that power\, legitimacy\, and social norms are shaped through both visibility and concealment\, presence and absence.
\n
This conference builds on these insights\, exploring the reciprocal transformation between phenomenology and politics: phenomenology illuminates political phenomena\, while political realities&mdash\;inequalities\, conflicts\, and power asymmetries&mdash\;reshape phenomenological inquiry. The conference seeks to foster dialogue on how political worlds are constituted\, contested\, and transformed through experience\, social practices\, and collective recognition. Particular attention will be given to the relational and structural dimensions of power\, the temporal and historical constitution of political life\, and the ways in which phenomenology can both reveal and be reshaped by these realities.
\n
By foregrounding experience\, structural dynamics\, and methodological innovation\, the conference aims to create a space for international dialogue among scholars investigating how phenomenology and politics transform one another\, offering insights into authority\, legitimacy\, inequality\, and the lived dimensions of political life.
\n
We welcome abstracts addressing\, but not limited to:
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Methodological Innovation: How phenomenological methods evolve when applied to political phenomena\, and how engagement with political realities reshapes conceptual and analytic frameworks.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Experience and Embodiment: Lived\, bodily\, and affective dimensions of political life\, including trust\, conflict\, solidarity\, exclusion\, and resistance.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Power\, Presence\, and Absence: How visibility\, concealment\, and structural asymmetries shape political authority\, legitimacy\, and relational dynamics.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Political Ontology and Structures: How social\, institutional\, material\, and historical conditions constitute political realities\, making them intelligible\, contestable\, and transformable.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Temporal and Historical Dimensions: Memory\, anticipation\, rupture\, and the opening of political futures.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Subjectivation\, Emancipation and Agency: How political realities shape subjectivity\, identity\, and collective self-understanding\, and how these processes inform phenomenological inquiry.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Technology and Mediation: The role of technology\, media\, and communication infrastructures in shaping political experience\, authority\, and participation.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Normativity and Epistemic Foundations: How phenomenology illuminates the frameworks through which political knowledge\, critique\, and understanding emerge.
\n
&middot\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Interdisciplinary Approaches: Contributions from political theory\, cultural studies\, media and communication studies\, or related fields examining the reciprocal shaping of politics and phenomenology.
\n
We welcome proposals for academic contributions that speak to the concerns of the conference as outlined above. Interested speakers should submit a 400-words abstract\, accompanied by a short biographical note\, including your full name\, institutional affiliation\, and a short bio (100 words)\, to phenomenologyandthepolitical@gmail.com by 25/07/2026. DESCRIPTION:

The 6th interdisciplinary Ereignis conference in Gdynia\, Poland\, August 8 and 9\, 2026.
\n
This conference offers a hybrid option for those unable to attend in person.
\n
Submission deadline: 1 June\, 2026 (guidelines below).
\n
\n
Our contemporary world is increasingly enamored by artificiality\, yet the Artificial Intelligence moniker of the latest dot-com bubble triggers profound anxieties. The idea that we can create an artificial intelligence by way of machinic technology is by no means novel in the history of culture. In the Iliad\, for example\, Homer speaks of Hephaestus&lsquo\; &ldquo\;handmaidens wrought of gold in the semblance of living maids&rdquo\;\, characteristic by their intelligence\, speech and strength. To Aristotle\, techn&ecirc\;&nbsp\;was a craft grounded in knowledge\, and in this sense AI is precisely a product of practice\, an art. Thus\, it can be argued that artificial is our use of encyclopedias\, as much of our use of chatbots who in turn perform database searches on our behalf. Should not thinking machines\, wrought by our own technological mastery\, be a solace and relief?
\n
Clearly\, our concerns with AI and the potential chaos brought about by Large Language Models (LLMs) are significant and diverse. We know that LLMs can have environmental\, social\, juridical\, and economic effects that are poorly understood\, but potentially cataclysmic in force. artifices\, the 6th Ereignis Conference\, seeks to bring together thinking from across philosophy\, social theory\, and psycho-analysis to shed light on the complex emergence of AI. We approach artifice in its broadest sense: as that which is derived\, non-originary\, or external to traditional notions of the authentic. Relevant areas of examination and contestation are whether AI should be considered as generating a novel kind of alterity\, prompting us to ask whether the Other is being reduced to a zero degree of algorithmization or manifesting as a radical new ethical encounter. Further\, we can ask whether LLMs should be viewed not merely as models of cognition but as schizoanalytic desiring-machines that actively reorganize the circuits of human affect\, labor\, and planetary life. This necessitates a fundamental questioning of the natural/artificial distinction itself\; by deconstructing this binary\, we reveal how our anxieties regarding the cyborg reflect a deeper lack\, forcing us to confront the structural brokenness of a humanity that has always been technologically mediated.
\n
This conference invites new ways of positioning &ldquo\;thinking machines&rdquo\; in relation to humans through the lenses of alterity\, psychoanalysis\, and schizoanalysis. We seek to explore AI not as a mere model of cognition\, but as a machinic assemblage that reorganizes desire\, labor\, and planetary forms of life. Drawing on the tension between the Other as a source of alienation (Sartre) and a source of creation (Levinas)\, we ask how AI functions as a Big Other or as an instansiation of the symbolic order. Beyond simple ethics or regulation\, we aim to address the &ldquo\;cyborging&rdquo\; of humanity and the political task of philosophy -- moving toward a post-Lacanian and Deleuzian understanding of how modes of life and care can be composed within the shadow of the machinic earth.
\n
Key Questions
\n
We invite papers from across disciplines that engage one or more of these questions:&nbsp\;
\n
\n
Can we consider AI as a manifestation of Alterity itself\, or does the algorithmic reduction of the Other eliminate the very possibility of unconditional hospitality?
\n
How does the symbolic distinction between the &ldquo\;natural&rdquo\; body and the &ldquo\;artificial&rdquo\; cyborg create new circuits of desire and lack\, and what are the effects of embracing this structural ambiguity?
\n
In what ways does AI act as a desiring-machine (Deleuze/Guattari) that reconfigures perception\, affects\, and the production of subjectivity beyond the thermodynamics of information?
\n
Can we trace a philosophical archaeology (Agamben/Stiegler) of the thinking machine to dismantle the binary logic currently populating the debate on automation?
\n
Does AI serve as the ultimate source of the self&rsquo\;s alienation\, or can it be the site where the self is constituted through a new encounter with a machinic Stranger?
\n
How can we move beyond the &ldquo\;broken&rdquo\; personality to develop a ludic\, post-humanist analysis of AI that focuses on planetary co-existence and new modes of care?
\n
\n
Invitation
\n
We invite papers from all traditions and schools of philosophy and adjoining discipline (critical and social theory\, psycho-analysis and schizoanalysis\, media studies and arts\, literary theory and comparative literature\, etc.) to address any of the topics and questions above. Papers should be written either in English or in Polish and prepared for blind review.
\n\n
The field of translation and music has been attracting increased attention recently: this is evident in numerous monographs\, research papers\, and conferences focused on the complex relationship between words and sounds (see also Bennett\, 2025: 1). As Susam-Sarajeva (2008: 189-190) has noted\, this relationship appears at best challenging\, since translation scholars are &ldquo\;more comfortable dealing with written texts\,&rdquo\; and consequently\, &ldquo\;end up sliding into a predominantly textual analysis.&rdquo\; Similarly\, Desblache (2019: 58) argues that the two fields\, which are genuinely interested in that relationship &ndash\; namely\, translation studies and musicology &ndash\; remain separate because both are practice-oriented disciplines that primarily focus on either verbal translation or music.
\n\n
Against this backdrop\, we would like to bring the two fields together through semiotics-based research on musical texts\, believing that this perspective has the potential to create resonance for general translation studies. It has been argued that semiotics is good for translation studies (Stecconi 2007\; Marais 2019\; Kourdis 2023)\, which means &ndash\; at least potentially &ndash\; that there is a good deal of methodological and theoretical capital that can be utilized. Research on translation and music can definitely espouse a movement away from words\, verbal artefacts and textual research towards the understanding of the performative\, enacted\, embedded and embodied nature of meaning making within translation\, i.e. towards a deeper understanding of material processes of cultural practices\, which necessitate moving beyond the verbal fixation and concentrating on more semiotically-informed approaches.
\n\n
In the special issue\, we would like to see how the actual go-between of semiotics bridges the fields of translation studies and musicology. We encourage scholars from across the academy to explore and provide their unique insight within the suggested thematic focus of translation\, music and semiotics. We welcome both conceptual and empirical research. Possible topics include\, but are not limited to the following questions:
\n\n
● Can (and if yes\, then how can) semiotics contribute to solving the conceptual confusion within translation studies as exemplified by translating musical texts?
\n\n
● How can translation and music capitalize theoretically on various theories of semiotics and vice versa?
\n\n
● Can we (and if yes\, then how can we) apply conceptual frameworks developed by various schools\, e.g. the Moscow-Tartu School of Semiotics\, Paris School\, Eco&rsquo\;s interpretative semiotics\, Groupe &mu\;\, Peircean semiotics\, etc. to the study of translating musical texts?
\n\n
● What methodologies can we use to research the synergy of semiotic systems in musical texts?
\n\n
● How can the concept of &ldquo\;textuality&rdquo\; be rethought when applied to musical compositions as texts to be translated?
\n\n
● How can the study of translating musical texts through semiotics help to challenge the traditional hierarchy between linguistic and non-linguistic forms of meaning-making?
\n\n
● How can semiotics challenge the literal and the human in translating musical texts?
\n\n
● How can semiotic approaches account for the performative\, enacted\, embedded and embodied dimensions of musical translation?
\n\n
● How can semiotics bridge the disciplinary gap between musicology and translation studies?
\n\n
In order to submit the paper\, one is kindly asked to submit the manuscript by sending it to:
\n
annaredzioch@uw.edu.pl\, malgra@amuz.lodz.pl and studiasemiotyczne@pts.edu.pl
\n\n
All submitted papers will be double-blind peer-reviewed.

SUMMARY:Continental Philosophy of Action
UID:20260418T154952Z-iCalPlugin-Grails@philevents-web-f5d4878dd-dnjxp
TZID:Europe/Madrid
LOCATION:Faculty of Philology\, University City\, Pl. Menéndez Pelayo\, s/n\, Moncloa - Aravaca\, Madrid\, Spain\, 28040
DESCRIPTION:
The aim of the two-day international conference is to explore\, clarify and apply the resources of Continental thought about action and agency.
\n
\n
Format: Speakers will have 20 minutes to present their paper\, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion.&nbsp\;Those interested in participating should send a 400-word abstract to cpa@ucm.es by 30 April\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
\n
Re-examining AI / Rethinking Modernity
\n
Critical philosophical\, anthropological and interdisciplinary perspectives on technology
\n
Corfu\, 22-23 October 2026
\n
&nbsp\;
\n\n
Keynote Speakers
\n
Agostino Cera\, Associate Professor\, Humanities Department\, University of Ferrara
\n
More Keynote Speakers tba)
\n\n
Conference Language
\n
English
\n\n
Abstract submission
\n
You are kindly requested to send both your abstract (max. 300 words) and a short CV (max. 150 words) in one .doc file at: &nbsp\;aicene.research@gmail.com
\n
&nbsp\;
\n
Important Dates
\n
Abstract submission deadline: June 15\, 2026
\n
Abstract acceptance notification: July 31\, 2026
\n
Conference Program: September 2026
\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Otherness\n
Conference of the Society for the Phenomenology of Religious Experience
\n\nNovember 17-19\, 2026\n
Universit&eacute\; catholique de Louvain&nbsp\;(UC Louvain\, Louvain-la-Neuve\, Belgium)
\n\n
https://sophere.org/upcoming-conferences/
\n\n\n
Call for Papers
\n\n
The Other is distinct from the Self\, regardless of whether the Other is accessible to the Self or not&ndash\;as something that enables self-reflection and revelation through the distance it provides to the Self. &nbsp\;In this way\, the Other plays a crucial and multifaceted role within the phenomenological tradition. On one hand\, the Other is set in a position counteracting the Self\, while still remaining an essential part of the constitution of the Self. &nbsp\;As Husserl showed in&nbsp\;Cartesian Meditations\,&nbsp\;&nbsp\;eliminating the Other from one&rsquo\;s experience would make the constitution of experience impossible.&nbsp\;
\n\n
\n\n
\n\n
\n\n
&nbsp\;Please send abstracts (of max. 500 words) formatted for anonymous reviewing. The abstracts must be written in English and sent to&nbsp\;conference2026@sophere.org\, and please cc to Miyuki Ono (miyuki.ono@student.kuleuven.be)\, &nbsp\;by May 15\, 2026.
