Call for Papers – 2015 Ryerson Graduate Philosophy Conference

Philosophy in Practice

February 27-28, 2015                                                             

Keynote Speakers: Dr. Don Ihde (Stony Brook) and Dr. Francoise Baylis (Dalhousie)

Paper submissions are invited for the 2015 Ryerson Graduate Philosophy Conference. Entitled “Philosophy in Practice,” this two-day conference hopes to call attention to the role of philosophy in understanding and addressing current practical concerns. There is no facet of life that philosophical thought does not penetrate, and the implications for application are vast. By bringing together presenters from various philosophical backgrounds under a shared theme, we hope to illuminate the applicability of philosophy and to encourage its use outside of academia.

Submission requirements:

We invite submissions of high-quality papers suitable for 25-30 minute presentation (3,000 – 4, 000 words) from current graduate (MA or PhD) students and upper-level undergraduate students. Essays from all areas and traditions of philosophy are welcome, though, in keeping with our conference theme, preference will be given to papers that: (a) demonstrate the potential for applying philosophical thought to practical issues or concerns; (b) actually apply philosophical theory to a practical concern; or (c) demonstrate the ways in which philosophy can inform and be informed by other disciplines (e.g. women’s studies, sociology, biology, legal studies) that are typically understood as more ‘practical’ or ‘applied.’ (For a list of potential topics, visit:  http://rpgsu.com/home/conference/.)

The deadline for submission is December 12th 2014. Notification of accepted submissions will be sent out by mid-January. Submissions are to be sent by e-mail to: [email protected], with “RGPC Submission” in the subject line. Please include as three separate attachments (in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format):

            -(1) The paper prepared for blind review

            -(2) A 100-200 word abstract also prepared for blind review

            -(3) A cover page with the title of the paper, author’s name, e-mail address, affiliation,               and contact information. (Please include the information from the cover page in the                   body of the e-mail as well.)

The conference will be held over the weekend of February 27-28, 2015, at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, and will feature two keynote speakers: Distinguished Professor Don Ihde, and Canadian Research Chair in Bioethics and Philosophy, Dr. Francoise Baylis.
