Sofia University`s Faculty of Philosophy and the Bulgarian Society for Analytic Philosophy, kindly supported by the Austrian Embassy in Sofia, are organizing a conference to celebrate the 120th birth anniversary of Sir Karl Popper (1902-1994).
Karl Popper, the Austrian-born British philosopher, founder of Critical rationalism, is generally regarded as one of the greatest philosophers of science of the Twentieth century. His investigation of the Induction and Demarcation problems in the beginning of the thirties led him to a mutually beneficial critical exchange with the scholars of the famous Vienna circle which resulted in establishing a new falsificationist view of science and its development. In emigration, Popper wrote extensively on the methodology of the social sciences and, stimulated by the problem of why democracies had succumbed to tyranny in Europe, engaged his rationalist approach with severe criticism of historicist thought and totalitarian political and social practice. Popper’s political philosophy has had an immense influence on liberalism in post-war Western Europe and after 1989 was spread to Central and Eastern Europe.
Researchers and PhD students who are interested in Popper`s work are encouraged to submit an abstract prepared for a double-blind review. Abstracts should not exceed 250 words. All submissions should be suitable for presentation of approximately 20 minutes in length. After each presentation, speakers will be given 10 minutes for discussion.
The conference will take place at Sofia University, Bulgaria.
