Details

Every year, the British and Irish Postgraduate Philosophy Association (BIPPA) organises its Annual Conference, when we aim at bringing together postgraduate students from all over the UK and the Republic of Ireland to present their work, meet their peers and strengthen the postgraduate philosophical community. The conference includes talks by graduate students, keynote addresses by senior academics, and the BIPPA Annual Careers Workshop. During the second day of the conference, participants will also have the opportunity to attend our BIPPA Annual Masterclass.

This year’s conference will take place in person at University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, on the 11th and 12th of November 2022. The theme of the conference is ‘Gender, Race, Identity’. We welcome proposals for talks that fall within this topic, broadly understood, from all postgraduate students in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. We particularly encourage applications from all who identify as members of underrepresented groups in academia. People who have previously completed a postgraduate degree and are in the transition to another are also welcome, regardless of their enrolment status. Some topic suggestions for submissions include, but are not limited to, the following:

·       The social and political dimension of identity (including any philosophy that concerns the historical, political and economic constitution of race, gender, sexuality and class and potentially their overlapping)

·       Philosophy of personal identity (including debates in Metaphysics , Phenomenology, Existentialism, Frankfurt school and beyond)

·       Feminist philosophy (including under-represented canonical figures in the history of philosophy, feminist readings of the history of philosophy, branches of feminist philosophy e.g. Poststructuralist feminists, Black feminism, Marxist feminism, Analytic feminism and also lesser-known feminist thinkers)

·       Transgender philosophy, Transphilosophy, and Queer Theory

·       Afro-futurism, afro-pessimism, Africana critical theory/Black existentialism and Critical Race theory

·       Post-colonial, anti-colonial thought and Orientalism

·       Non-Western approaches to gender, race, personal identity, and social/political identity

To submit an abstract, please fill in the form below. Abstracts should be around 500 words, and cannot exceed 700 words. We also offer nine travel bursaries of up to £250 for participants of the event who will not have their expenses covered by their home university or their funding institution.

Please, note that participants at the conference will be asked to pay a conference fee of £20, in order to cover the costs of running the event. While we have tried to keep the fee to a minimum, we understand that some students may experience a difficult financial situation, so we will be happy to consider a fee waiver for these cases.
