Michigan State University’s Graduate Conference in Philosophy

March 25th, 2023

The Michigan State University Graduate Conference in Philosophy is now accepting abstracts for the conference to be held on Saturday, March 25th, 2023. Abstracts selected for presentation will be allotted 20 minute presentation times, followed by formal comments and Q & A. Submissions are open to both Graduate and Undergraduate students. The focus of the conference is interdisciplinary perspectives on the interconnections between theory, science, and politics. Abstracts addressing the conference themes of theory, science, and politics will be prioritized, though all abstracts demonstrating some significant philosophical motivation will be considered. Some possible topics include:

  • Environmental Philosophy/ Environmental Ethics

  • Environmental Racism

(NB: Our intention is to hold an in-person conference, but we will be augmenting that with a limited number of virtual Zoom sessions.)

Abstracts submitted for the conference should be approximately 300-500 words.

The deadline for submission is Friday, January 6th, 2023, and only abstracts will be reviewed. We expect to announce the abstracts selected for presentation by the beginning of February. Completed papers will be expected in early March.

We will also be using a formal commenter system; each presenter will be expected to provide very brief comments on 1 other paper. This is intended as a low-stress professionalization mechanism ensuring that all selected papers will receive formal feedback at the conference. Please let us know, along with your paper submission, if you are unwilling to comment.

Keynote: Helena Sheehan, Professor Emeritus, Dublin City University

Faculty Mentors: We strongly encourage undergraduate students to invite faculty mentors to the conference. The dialogue among professors, discussion of pedagogy, and expansion of mentoring opportunities for students, are among the desirable benefits of this conference. Additionally, faculty have played an important role in the success of the conference.
