Details

The Wolf Kuhn Ethics Institute at Saint Francis University (Loretto, PA) will be hosting a workshop on natural law June 8–10 2023, to coincide with the relaunch of the journal Lex Naturalis under the auspices of Catholic University of America press. The theme of the workshop will be Varieties of Natural Law. Thomas Ward will provide the keynote lecture “Scotus on the Contingency of the Natural Law.” The event will aim primarily to workshop papers contributing to a contemporary understanding of natural law. Given the theme, special consideration will be given to papers that highlight the Franciscan tradition or other non-Thomistic versions of natural law theory.

The event also aims to help build a community of scholars working on natural law. Toward this end, advanced graduate students and faculty below the rank of associate whose papers are accepted will have their lodging and some meals covered. Those with financial hardships can apply for additional support.

Questions, abstracts of no more than 500 words, and applications for additional support should be sent to Brian Besong (Associate Professor of Philosophy, Director of the Wolf-Kuhn Ethics Institute) at [email protected]. Full consideration will be given to abstracts submitted by April 30, 2023 and notification of acceptance will occur by May 6. Completed manuscripts, prepared for reading, should be approximately 3500 words.
