Grounding and Metaphysical Explanation Workshop

University of Southampton

The University of Southampton Philosophy Department will be hosting a workshop on grounding and metaphysical explanation from Thursday 29th June to Friday 30th June, 2023.

We plan to begin and conclude the workshop at around lunchtime on each day to allow time for people to travel to and from Southampton.

Themes

The aim of this in-person workshop is to bring together researchers in philosophy who work on the following topics:

• The pure metaphysics or logic of grounding and metaphysical explanation.

• The applications of grounding and metaphysical explanation to areas such as ethics, philosophy of mind, wider issues in metaphysics, philosophy of science, social ontology, and philosophy of mathematics.

• Historically-minded approaches to grounding and metaphysical explanation.

Papers

Professor Tuomas Tahko, Professor Anna-Sofia Maurin, and Dr Naomi Thompson are our keynote speakers. Four additional slots are reserved for submitted papers.

We invite abstracts of 750 – 1000 words. Papers should be suitable for a 45-minute presentation (e.g., about 5000 words).

We hope to have some funds for supporting current and recent postgraduate students.

If you are interested in presenting, please send your abstract to [email protected] by Friday 12th May.

Please include your name, affiliation, and status (i.e., student, postdoc, faculty) in the body of your email. The subject line should be ‘Grounding and metaphysical explanation workshop’. Abstracts should be attached as word documents and prepared for blind review.
