CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Masterclass with Professor Alexander Paseau (Oxford)

June 21st–23rd, 2023

In person at LMU Munich

Apply by April 21st, 2023

The Philosophy Students’ Union at the University of Munich is happy to announce that Alexander Paseau, Professor of Mathematical Philosophy at the University of Oxford, is coming to Munich for the 13th Munich Philosophical Masterclass. If you are interested in discussing Professor Paseau’s seminal contributions to the philosophy of logic and mathematics, we cordially invite you to apply by April 21st, 2023.

Topics of the masterclass will include mathematical knowledge, infinitary logic, structuralism in the philosophy of mathematics, and related issues. We are looking to have a diverse group of around 15 to 20 participants. We very much welcome applications from students at any university and both from graduate, including doctoral, and undergraduate students. Please, however, note that, for administrative reasons, we will have to admit philosophy students at the University of Munich with some preference.

In order to apply, please send us a letter of motivation outlining why you are interested in participating and in which ways, if at all, you have already engaged with the topics or with Professor Paseau’s work. It is not a prerequisite to have done so, however.

The letter of motivation should not exceed 500 words and can be much shorter than the limit. Please include general information about your philosophical background, including at which university you are studying, and send your application to [email protected] by April 21st, 2023 (CEST). We will let you know about the outcome by April 23rd.

In order to prepare for the masterclass, participants are expected to attend a preparatory seminar that will take place weekly, starting in the week of April 24th. The preparatory course will be held in hybrid format.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We are very much looking forward to your applications!
