Friday to Sunday, 26-28 April 2024 at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida

Symposium Focus: Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s (d. 606/1210) position as a preeminent figure of Postclassical Islam (ca. 1200-1900 CE) is becoming increasingly well known among scholars of Islam. As Rāzī was influential in nearly all areas of knowledge, this symposium welcomes proposals for presentations on any of the fields to which Rāzī dedicated himself, e.g., philosophy, logic, the sciences, magic and sorcery, theology, Qurʾānic exegesis, and jurisprudence. Presentations may also focus on Rāzī’s life and legacy. Proposals for presentations with a strong philological focus are encouraged.

Details of the Symposium:

·         Up to twelve presentations of 30-45 minutes each, plus Q&A. Scholars in all career stages are welcome to apply.

·         Frank Griffel (Yale University) will present the symposium’s keynote lecture.

·         Attendees’ meals (dinner on Friday; breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday; and breakfast and lunch on Sunday) will be provided. Attendees will be responsible for all other costs.

How to Apply:

·         Email your CV and an abstract, both in English, of no more than 500 words to Michael Rapoport at [email protected] by 1 August 2023.

·         Please include “Razi Symposium” in the email’s subject field.

·         Decision emails are expected to be sent in September 2023.

Please address all questions to [email protected]

The symposium is supported by FAU’s Chastain-Johnston Middle Eastern Studies Distinguished Professorship in Peace Studies
