On behalf of the ARC-Discovery Project “Keeping Kinship in Mind”, directed by Prof. Rob Wilson, we are excited to announce a seminar with Dr. Jeff Kochan, a visiting research fellow of the Keeping Kinship in Mind project for August 2023. The seminar is open to all and will be particularly relevant to those in the humanities and social sciences, both undergraduates and postgraduates.
The seminar starts on Thursday, August 3rd, from 4pm to 6pm, in ARTS [131]. We will keep meeting every Thursday in August, at this same time and same place.
The Keep Kinship in Mind project focuses on the intersection between philosophy and anthropology, particularly on the concept of kinship, and the work of Dr. Kochan combines History and Philosophy of Science with Sociology of Scientific Knowledge, with a dash of existential phenomenology (below you can find the topics addressed in each week).
Seminar Schedule
August 3rd – Overview of the Keeping Kinship in Mind Project
In the first meeting, Prof. Rob Wilson, Lucia Neco, Jorge Mendonca, and Alberto Guerrero, all from UWA, will present their research associated with the project Keeping Kinship in Mind, exploring different aspects of kinship across the cognitive, biological, and social sciences. Jorge Mendonca discusses the notion of altruism in anthropology and how this notion is related to kinship. He discusses the ways in which altruism in anthropology differs from definitions of altruism in other sciences, explaining what sort of conceptual problems raise from the particular account of altruism dominant in anthropology. Lucia Neco argues that kinship relations can fit into a non-reductionist naturalistic framework of social systems. Defending that humans are not alone in the realm of social reality, Lucia rejects the dominant view of kinship in anthropology, in which a subjective, performative characterization of kinship is adopted. Alberto Guerrero-Velazquez explores the relationship between kinship and episodic and collective memory in humans through the adaptive value of collective constructing, sharing and remembering memories. He claims that kinship could have a preponderant role in the emergence of increasingly complex forms of memory in human evolution, like episodic and collective. Finally, Prof. Rob Wilson discusses the progenerative account of kinship that he has defended in recent publications. Here Rob discusses and responds to concerns that progenerativism about kinship may encourage some politically problematic views, such as racism and nationalism.
