Please join the International Society for Environmental Ethics (ISEE) on November 1 at 5 pm Eastern Time (4 pm CT/3 pm MT/2 pm PT) for an hour-long webinar discussion of the recently-published book, Tenacious Beasts! The book is authored by ISEE's 2022 Andrew Light Award for Public Philosophy winner, Dr. Christopher Preston.
This webinar will feature a conversation about Tenacious Beasts: Wildlife Recoveries That Change How We Think About Animals with philosopher Christopher Preston (University of Montana) and environmental philosopher/philosopher of science Evelyn Brister (Rochester Institute of Technology).
Christopher J. Preston (PhD) is an English-born writer and philosophy professor based in Missoula, MT. His four books and three edited collections focus on topics related to wildlife, environment, climate, and technology. In addition to academic journals, he writes for venues that include The Atlantic, Orion, Smithsonian, Discover, Sierra Magazine, the BBC, and the Wall Street Journal. His new book, Tenacious Beasts: Wildlife Recoveries That Change How We Think About Animals investigates a dozen species back from the brink of extinction. He meets the scientists, indigenous leaders, and activists responsible for their return and uncovers what these tenacious wild animals can teach. Professor Preston won ISEE's 2022 Andrew Light Award for Public Philosophy for his publicly-engaged research and writing.
Evelyn Brister (PhD) is a professor of philosophy at Rochester Institute of Technology. She is an expert in philosophy of science and environmental philosophy, with a focus on the role of values in land management and ecological applications. Her research includes work on the value assumptions involved in ecological restoration, especially with regard to the use of biotechnology for conservation. Professor Brister also works with the Public Philosophy Network to support philosophers who are pursuing engaged scholarship and interdisciplinary collaboration, and she is co-editor of A Guide to Field Philosophy: Case Studies and Practical Strategies (Routledge, 2020; co-edited with Robert Frodeman).
