Details

Philosophy is an ancient effort of humankind. In recent times it has
come to be increasingly appreciated that philosophy not only
prescribes what life should be, but is itself able to advance
precisely with the experience of the times. Thus the theme of the
23rd World Congress of Philosophy in Athens, August 2013 was
“Philosophy as Inquiry and Way of life”.

This suggests that in order to engage fruitfully in philosophy it is
important to be aware of the development of social structures. These
are impacted by the intensive process of global transformation
implemented by communication and commercial interchange. Much is
written on this in terms of the sciences, but these abstract from the
human meaning. Hence it is the task of philosophy today to deepen
this effort by opening horizons to ways of promoting human life. For
Cicero this is culture understood as cultivating the soul.

Thus the conference at Xian Jiaotong University will be concerned
with the development of social life especially in the last 50 years,
with a view to understanding the impact of modernization and
globalization on the culture and values of China. This search is for
understanding of the challenges this entails and possible creative
responses.

Papers are invited especially on the following issues:
- Research on social development
- Research on problems of modernization
- Research on values and culture
- Research on the impact of global interchange
