Details

It may be the fate of philosophy, especially of metaphysics, that it
faces its greatest challenges without being adequately self-aware of
the limitations of its own horizons and perspectives and the means at
its disposal. Hence, its accomplishments are compromised and its
hopes turned into new challenges. Perhaps nowhere will this be more
true than in the field of first philosophy or metaphysics where the
deepest issues with the most pervasive implications are engaged.

Thus one of the great opportunities of this global age is to
encounter quite different cultural experiences and constructs in the
light of which exciting new possibilities for human life and meaning
can be engaged. This is the hope of the present conference on
metaphysics East and West.

It has been pointed out however that the history of Chinese
philosophy has been written in response to Western questions such
that what is brought forward for consideration in philosophical
circles is selective and threatens to be misleading.

It is significant then that the field of philosophy has been notably
broadened for the program of the 2013 World Congress of Philosophy to
take account of the ways of life of a people. This invites
philosophers and metaphysicians to go deeply into the actual exercise
of life by peoples at large. This enables each to bring forth their
progressive understanding of life and its meaning through a process
of global dialogue. The present conference is intended to promote and
extend this interchange.

In this it will be important to avoid simplifications which tend to
deceive and to realize that each people has developed its own way of
understanding all phases and facets of life. The metaphysics of each
then will be complete in its own way, but with the potential for
enriching and being enriched by the metaphysics of the other. These
global times bring forward this important grounding of philosophy in
the way of life of a people.

Hence papers are invited on Eastern and Western cultures as regard:

1. The nature and goals of metaphysics
2. The relation of metaphysics to ways of life: East and West
3. Characteristics of metaphysics: East and West
4. Emerging possibilities of dialogue between metaphysics East and
   West
5. Interdisciplinary contributions to metaphysics from epistemology,
ethics and political issues, as well as physics and psychology
