Details

Human dignity has been the subject of numerous philosophical debates throughout the twenty-first century. Yet, the debate on how the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies will affect human dignity and how human dignity can inform the ethical evaluation of AI technologies is sparse at best. In light of this, we invite submissions for events that aim to broadly address issues relating to AI and human dignity, ranging from conceptual issues to applied analyses.

We will organize two workshops on these topics. One will take place in Germany (FAU, Erlangen) from the 31st of October to the 1st of November, 2024, and the other will take place in Mexico (UNAM, Mexico City) on the 14th and 15th of November, 2024. For speakers who lack institutional funds for travel, the Centre for Philosophy and AI Research (FAU) has made funds available to attend the workshop in Erlangen. A selection of papers from the two workshops will be submitted to a proposed special issue in the Journal of Applied Philosophy. There will also be an opportunity to publish open access in Spanish in an edited volume (translated versions of English articles will also be considered). Both workshops will include a KEYNOTE by Prof. Dr. Vincent Müller.

Submission information

To submit to either of the workshops, please email an abstract with a minimum length of 750 words and a maximum of 1000 words (excluding the reference list) to [email protected] and [email protected] no later than the 1st of May, 2024. Please write “AI and Human Dignity SUBMISSION” in the subject line. In the email, please include author information, a title, a short abstract (for inclusion in the workshop program), which of the workshops you want to attend (attending both is possible, but please include a preference order), and if funding is needed (only available for the workshop in Germany).

Please note that works submitted to the workshop in Germany should be in English; presentations will be in English also. The preferred language for the workshop in Mexico is English, but we will also consider submissions in Spanish.

Other important dates

A decision of acceptance will be issued no later than the 1st of July; we expect full papers to be made available to the workshop attendees no later than the 1st of October. After the workshops, there will be an opportunity to revise it for the final submissions.

Lastly, for those interested, we will also organize a series of online talks on the topics.

All the best,

Nancy Abigail Núñez Hernández and Björn Lundgren
