The causal content of stereotypes

Abstract: Stereotypes are commonly assumed to be statistical generalizations. In this paper, we offer an alternative account of stereotypes as having causal content. On our view, stereotypes have a central explanatory, rather than predictive, function. In addition to providing a better explanation for many features of stereotypes and our reasoning with them, this account allows us to draw some important upshots for the epistemology of stereotypes and their apparent resistance to disconfirmation.
