The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Philosophy Department is calling for papers for its annual Uehiro Graduate Student Conference “Political and Social Emotions—How They Divide or Unite.” We invite graduate students working in all areas of philosophy to submit papers on the conference theme. To best represent the UHM Philosophy Department’s strengths, we highly welcome works in comparative philosophy. In addition, we encourage submissions from members of underrepresented groups. The conference will take place in person. Participants will be provided with lodging at Lincoln Hall for three nights during the conference. Limited airfare funding will be available. The conference is free and open to the public.
We are honored to have Dr. Martha Nussbaum (University of Chicago) and Hagop Sarkissian (CUNY Graduate Center) as our keynote speakers for this year’s conference.
Papers should explore emotions within a political or social context. Specifically, our focus is on how emotions have the power to divide societies, but also the power to unite them. We are primarily interested in papers in the following areas: Philosophy of Emotions (Ethics, Epistemology, Aesthetics), Moral Psychology, and Political/Social Philosophy. However, we welcome papers from all philosophical fields and traditions.
Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes in length, and students will be allotted another 10 minutes for questions. Paper submissions should not exceed 4000 words. Abstracts are also welcome and should not exceed 300 words. Preference will be given to full papers over abstracts. Submissions should be prepared for blind review (no identifying information on the document itself). The deadline for submissions is Sep 30th, and presenters will be notified of our decision by Oct 12th
For accepted presenters some travel subsidies WILL be provided, and lodging for the duration of the conference WILL be covered. Lunch will be provided for the days of the conference, as well as a dinner on the final day of the conference.
Send papers or abstracts as a PDF file prepared for blind review to [email protected]. In the body of the e-mail, please include: 1) Your name, 2) Title of the paper, 3) Institutional affiliation, 4) Contact information (e-mail, phone, or mailing address).
