Hegel’s Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences takes up the topic of
psychology in the last part of ‘Philosophy of subjective Spirit (Geist)’.
Hegel’s investigation into the notion of ‘Geist’ – which is translated into
English by using either ‘spirit’ or ‘mind’, each with different connotations
– bears the potential to challenge our modern understanding of philosophy of
mind. This section has been virtually neglected in comparison with other
parts of Hegel’s system, and this is quite surprising in consideration of
the importance of the issues there faced. In his psychology Hegel deals with
the activity of theoretical, practical and free mind. The development of
cognition is here investigated through its moments –  ‘intuition,’
‘representation,’ ‘imagination,’ ‘language,’ and ‘thought,’ – and the
development of the will is shown through the progressive sublation of
‘practical feelings,’ ‘urges,’ and ‘happiness.’
This workshop is meant to be a forum for presenting various works-in-
progress and to bring together philosophers from different background. The
aim of the workshop is to discuss the possible contribution of Hegel’s
thought to prominent current debates.

Registration is free and open until Sunday 1st December. For registration,
please write an e-mail with your contact details to
[email protected]  or to susanne.herrmann-

Papers to be given will be circulated one week before the workshop. Speakers
will only provide a brief introduction to their papers, thus freeing up
valuable time for discussion.
