CFP: John Locke Society conference 2025

The 2025 conference of the John Locke Society will be hosted by the University at Buffalo (https://www.buffalo.edu/cas/philosophy.html) in July 2025. This will be the next meeting in the society’s workshop series (https://thejohnlockesociety.com/workshop-series/). The conference aims to encourage Locke scholarship and to promote interaction between experts in different disciplines. Papers on any aspect of Locke’s thought, his influences, and his impact are welcome.

Keynote speakers

• Daniel Layman (Davidson College). Prof. Layman is the author of Locke Among the Radicals: Liberty and Property in the Nineteenth Century (OUP 2020). He is currently the editor in chief of Locke Studies, as well as being the chair of the PPE major at Davidson.
• Anat Schechtman (University of Texas at Austin). Prof. Schechtman’s research on early modern theories of quantity and infinity has addressed Locke as well as Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz. Three of her articles from the last decade have been reprinted in The Philosopher’s Annual, which aims each year to reprint the ten best articles published in philosophy.

Paper submission and other participation

• To be considered for the program, submit a paper abstract (of no more than 600 words) by January 31, 2025. Please prepare your abstract for anonymous review, and send it as a pdf file attached to an email to [email protected]. We aim to send notices of acceptance, and publish the program, in March 2025.
• Each paper presentation will have a commentator. If you would like to volunteer to comment, whether or not you are submitting a paper, please do so by email to [email protected]. 
• Attendance by those other than speakers and commentators will be welcome, but we will ask all attendees to register in advance. Details will be available after the program is announced.

The University at Buffalo is a flagship campus of the State University of New York.

Buffalo, NY is a city in western New York state. Niagara Falls, NY is less than 20 miles to the north. The closest major city is Toronto, which is about 100 miles away. McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, which will host the 2025 meeting of the Hume Society in the week of July 14, is about halfway between Buffalo and Toronto. Within the US, Buffalo is about 200 miles from Cleveland, and a little further from Pittsburgh. New York City is on the other side of New York state, about 400 miles away.
