Description:
We are excited to announce a one-day interdisciplinary workshop on Integrated Information Theory (IIT), designed for individuals who are interested in learning about the basics of this theory. Featuring Wanja Wiese as the lead instructor, this workshop will provide an accessible introduction to IIT, targeting philosophers and cognitive scientists—particularly doctoral students—who are interested in the discussions surrounding theories of consciousness.
Target Audience:
This workshop is aimed at participants from diverse academic backgrounds who have little to no prior knowledge of IIT. It is specifically designed for those who wish to gain foundational understanding rather than for experts in the field. Please indicate if you have a specific interest in a particular aspect of IIT, such as:
-
Fundamental claims and mathematical formulations of IIT
-
Philosophical interpretations of IIT
-
Positioning of IIT in relation to other mathematical theories of consciousness
-
Advantages and limitations of IIT
Preparation:
To prepare for the workshop, we recommend foundational texts that provide essential context, covering both an introduction to the theory and critical perspectives:
-
Albantakis, L. et al. (2023). Integrated information theory (IIT) 4.0: Formulating the properties of phenomenal existence in physical terms. PLOS Computational Biology.
-
Bayne, T. (2018). On the axiomatic foundations of the integrated information theory of consciousness. Neuroscience of Consciousness.
-

Pre-Discussion:
A hybrid pre-discussion will take place on November 13, 2024, to set the stage for the main workshop. This will allow participants to share their interests and questions in advance, facilitating a more fruitful discussion during the workshop.
Registration:
Please submit your registration by November 10 to [email protected].
We look forward to an engaging discussion and stimulating exchange on one of the most fascinating topics in contemporary consciousness research, perfect for those eager to learn!
Best regards,
