Abstract:

Creativity seems, essentially, bringing something out of nothing. Given this, it looks difficult to throw light on its nature. I shall argue that there is something to this claim, and that the standard analysis of creativity is uninformative.

About the Speaker:

Derek Matravers was an undergraduate at UCL, and a graduate student at Cambridge where he obtained his PhD in 1991. After three years as a post-doctoral lecturer, he moved to The Open University in 1994. He has published extensively in aesthetics, as well as ethics and the philosophy of mind. His book, Fiction and Narrative, will be published by OUP in May.
