Details

In June 2025 Birkbeck College, University of London will host an international conference on Frantz Fanon, to mark the centenary year of Fanon’s birth.

The program committee is looking to include a further two papers for presentation at the conference. Many of the confirmed speakers have a primarily philosophical research background, and the expectation is that many of the papers will consequently be philosophical in the first instance. However as befits the nature of Fanon’s own work, interdisciplinarity is encouraged in submissions for the event.

It is the aim of the workshop to cover or at the very least subsidize all travel, accommodation and dining expenses for the two scholars accepted for presentation. We especially welcome submissions from individuals from underrepresented groups in academia, and from graduate students working on Fanon and related figures/topics.

Papers presented on the main program will presumptively be published in an edited monograph or guest edited special journal issue.

Topics could include, but are not limited to:
-Fanon and health
-Fanon and psychiatry
-Fanon and phenomenology
-Affects and emotions
-Theories of recognition
-Pathologies, broadly construed
-Fanon and conceptions of the human
-Fanon and ethics/metaethics
-Racism and the unconscious
-Theories of action in Fanon
