We invite submissions for a special issue of Philosophical Studies on fundamentality.
Description
The notion of fundamentality has received much attention in recent years. In particular, significant progress has been achieved by developing and comparing different grounding-based conceptions of fundamentality, clarifying their role vis-à-vis fundamentality-like notions such as naturalness, and (most recently) defining relative fundamentality in terms of grounding.
With this theoretical groundwork in place, we believe it is time to identify new directions for the study of fundamentality. This special issue aims to achieve this by bringing together work on:
1. Novel conceptions of fundamentality: For example, confirmed contributions develop novel conceptions of fundamentality by investigating emergence, metaphysical priority, generative relations, zero-ground, and purity.
2. The theoretical role of fundamentality: For example, confirmed contributions discuss the epistemic value of fundamentality, as well as concrete applications of fundamentality to natural kinds, metaphysical indeterminacy, spacetime emergence, and normativity.
