For the Academic Year 2013/2014 the Philosophical Association “Syzetesis”
(www.syzetesis.it) is hosting a Conference on Sensible World and
Intelligible World: From Ancients to Moderns to be held at the Department
of Philosophy of “Sapienza” University of Rome on July 4, 2014.
Such a subject undoubtedly belongs to the history of philosophy in its
entirety, from the Ancient thought to the rise of Modern science through
the Middle ages; from the Cartesian reflection to German idealism, up to
the Twentieth Century. Is there an intelligible world or not? What is its
relationship with the sensible world? Under what conditions can they come
into contact or communicate with each other? These are clearly some of the
most complex riddles which in every time and place Western philosophy had
to deal with. Whether we call it “world of ideas” or “concept”; whether it
is accessible by means of intuition or by reason alone; and, more
radically, whether an intelligible world exists or not – around these
crucial theoretical options a number of systems of thought have been built
up, overturned, or demolished, while affecting at the same time and in
fundamental ways scientific, theological, ethical, and aesthetical
concerns of the highest importance.

Such a wide field of reflection, both historical and theoretical, opened
by the above questions, gives the opportunity to take position within the
debate with contributions of both kinds.
