Details

We are pleased to invite you to the XIX. conference Mediterranean Roots of Philosophy– Philosophia Perennis: Celebrating the 800th Birth Anniversary of St. Thomas Aquinas.

The conference is organized by the Croatian Philosophical Society and the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Split.

It will take place from April 3 to 5, 2025.

This year’s theme honors the monumental legacy of Thomas Aquinas, the greatest medieval thinker of the Mediterranean. His work represents a profound synthesis of philosophy and theology, fostering harmony and mutual respect between philosophy, religion, and science, and highlighting their complementarity. A key feature of Thomistic philosophy is its realistic method, rooted in common-sense experience, while its enduring intellectual appeal lies in its speculative insights into transcendence, which are central to Aquinas’s metaphysics of being. For these reasons, the tradition has fittingly described Aquinas’s philosophy as philosophia perennis—the eternal philosophy.

In addition to this year’s special theme, the symposium is also open to our permanent focus: the exploration of Mediterranean philosophy and culture. Therefore, the program is divided into the following thematic sections:

• Thomas Aquinas – Thomism – Neo-Thomism

• Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue in the Mediterranean

• Mediterranean Roots of Croatian Philosophy

• Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance Philosophy in the Mediterranean

• Globalization Challenges and Multiculturalism in the Mediterranean

Interdisciplinary research is welcomed.
