3pm-4:30pm: Narrative and the Construction of Race
Panelists: Derek Burrows (Distinguished Visiting Scholar), Sally Haslanger (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Amy Marks (Suffolk University)
EXHIBIT at the Adams Gallery: “The Mirror of Race: Seeing Ourselves through History,” open now through Feb. 25, 2014
This is multimedia, interactive exhibit features:
--19th century photography in an interactive display that encourages viewer engagement (see the attached photograph of the exhibition): two “discovery walls” in the exhibit feature original photographs, but without immediately visible captions: the visitor must lift a reproduction case cover to learn about what it is they are seeing and reflect on how the reality matches their expectations;
--Other 19th century artifacts;
--Works by Ed Drew, the first tintypes in 150 years (since the Civil War) of Americans at war;
--Two short films by Derek Burrows and a slideshow
