Details

The Department of Philosophy will host its graduate conference on the promotion of peace - broadly conceived - from different disciplinary approaches. Contributions from all areas of philosophy, theology and peace studies are welcome. The conference will take place in person.

Topic Areas

Philosophy, theology, law and peace studies are the macro fields from which papers can be proposed. Papers are invited that focus on, but are not limited to, the following topics

Definitions of peace have been offered throughout history. What are the relationships between religion, justice and peace? How can the common quest for peace be adequately understood in philosophy, theology, and peace studies? How can specific religious teachings - including the Catholic Magisterium - influence the study of peace?

The military is increasingly openly involved in peace operations around the world. How can the military avoid violence and promote justice, solidarity and peace?

Migration is a crucial reality of our time. It is well known that violence and poor living conditions cause this phenomenon and that this phenomenon generates further violence. But can migration become a source of peace among peoples?

Hatred, oppression and narcissism are a symptom (and a further cause) of personal and collective malaise. Personal illness and social malaise are tangible effects of this in contemporary Western society. How can ways of personal and collective healing and pacification be encouraged?

In common experience, and now in academia, reference is often made to hate speech and the related phenomenon of fake news. Communication and dialogue, on the other hand, are synonymous with peace and friendship. How can they be improved by promoting peace?

Economics is closely linked to the need for justice. What views on economics can help peacebuilders?

Transhumanism is proposed as a response to the many individual and social problems that humanity faces today. Can transhumanists also point to a path to peace among peoples?
