CALL FOR PAPERS

ISSR is pleased to announce its 2025 summer conference in response to our new priority research area on ecology and the environment.

Plenary speakers will include Mike Hulme, Niels Henrik Gregersen, Susan Bratton, Lisa Sideris, Peter Scott and Panu Pihkala. Further speakers will be announced shortly, including speakers from various different faith traditions.

There will be space in parallel sessions for submitted papers on a wide range of topics relevant to religious engagements with environmental/ecological issues, including:

• The role of the natural, social, and human sciences in current discourse about climate change

• Diverse religious approaches to environmental issues in world faith traditions, and their history and sociology;

• The relationship between worldview beliefs and environmental emotions, anxieties, actions and commitments;

• Eco-theologies and conceptualisations of the environment;

• Pedagogies of environmental awareness,

• Experiences of nature and official discourses in religious and scientific environmentalisms;

• Planetary intelligence and environmental sensitivity in relation to spiritual intelligence.

To submit a paper proposal, please send your full name, academic affiliation (if any), title and an abstract (of not more than 250 words) to [email protected] with the email title: “LASTNAME – Proposal – ISSR2025”. The submission deadline is 1st April 2025. Later submissions may be considered, but acceptance will depend on space in the program.

The conference will be “hybrid”, so it will be possible to be part of it from anywhere with an online connection. The plenary sessions and one strand of the parallel sessions will be online. There are likely to be additional parallel sessions in the conference hotel, and also for online participants. Papers can be submitted both by those who will be present in person, and by those who will be participating online. The main conference language will be English, but papers can be submitted for parallel sessions in other languages.

The conference fee (which includes full board and lodging) is £500 for those attending in person, and £50 for those participating online. A reduced fee for online attendance will be available for those from the Global South and for full-time students, and a limited number of bursaries may be available for emerging scholars and scholars from developing countries attending in person. Please mark on the registration form if you are only able to attend for part of the conference, or if you wish to share a bedroom etc.

Check-in will be from 1400 on Monday 30th June, and the conference will close with lunch on Thursday 3rd July.

The conference venue is the Stanton House Hotel, a delightful country house in the Cotswold area, where we can all be together and enjoy good hospitality. Adjoining is the extensive Stanton Park, with lake, woodland and nature reserve, and St. Leonards’ Church, dating from the 12th century.
