Please join us on Friday, March 28, from 2-3:30 p.m. for a virtual event featuring Andrew Janiak, PhD, and Liz Milewicz on "Reforming Philosophy through Collaboration" as part of Falvey Library's Digital Seeds Speakers Series.

Philosophy began as conversations and collaborations, between men and women, through writing and in person, at a time when there were no hard definitions of what philosophy was or who counted as a philosopher. Yet the voices of many of the influential figures in these philosophical conversations disappeared when philosophy’s canon was constructed. Project Vox has spent the last ten years publishing information about these overlooked voices in philosophy’s past. As a collaboration between Duke University’s libraries and its philosophy department, across disciplines and academic ranks, this project has developed an ethos of listening to different voices and perspectives and finding ways to pair new ideas with existing practice.

Andrew Janiak is Professor of Philosophy and Bass Fellow at Duke University, where he has taught for more than 20 years. Janiak is the co-leader of Project Vox with Dr. Liz Milewicz. His most recent book is The Enlightenment’s Most Dangerous Woman: Émilie Du Châtelet and the Making of Modern Philosophy (Oxford University Press, 2024), which has been reviewed in the Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker and numerous other venues.

Liz Milewicz is the Director of The ScholarWorks Center for Open Scholarship at Duke University Libraries, where she helps promote and support programs, services, and resources that help scholars realize the full potential of their work, whether presenting it in new forms, expanding and engaging audiences, or planning for sustainability. With Andrew Janiak, she co-leads Project Vox, an open educational resource on early modern women philosophers that also serves as a platform for students, faculty, and staff to gain hands-on experience in collaborative research and digital publishing.
