Haunting(s): Multidisciplinary Approaches Annual Conference

A Two-Day Conference - Funded by the Cardiff University’s Research Culture Fund

Date: Tuesday 10th – Wednesday 11th June 2025

Location: Cardiff University (Hybrid Format - Online and In-Person)

Organisers: Dr Robert Lloyd (Cardiff University), Thomas Payré (Cardiff University and CY Cergy Paris Université), Dr Louise Child (Cardiff University), Morgan Lee (Cardiff University) and Padmanabha Reddy Addula (Cardiff University and Bristol University)

The notion of ‘haunting’ encompasses a rich tapestry of meanings that extend beyond the spectral apparitions of Gothic fiction. It can signify the lingering trace or impact of something absent or hidden, manifesting as memories, emotions, or residues from the past that persistently influence – or disrupt – the present. A permeation of the uncanny, it blurs the lines between what is familiar and unsettling, invoking an eerie atmosphere of uncertainty or a sense of disquiet that transcends conventional understandings of the world and how we attempt to make sense of it. But haunting also extends beyond individual experiences, delving into collective and social realms. It can symbolise unresolved conflicts, hidden truths, or societal issues demanding acknowledgment, configuring it as a powerful metaphor within cultural texts as well as academic subjects and critical disciplines. It traverses temporal and spatial boundaries, intruding from the past - or, indeed, the future - into the present (and vice versa), and imbuing places with an enduring (non)presence, unbound by linear temporality.

The complexity of haunting lies in its ability to encapsulate the interplay between the seen and unseen, the tangible and intangible, inviting scholars to unravel its intricacies and understand its implications across diverse facets of human experience. This two-day conference aims to bring together a diverse range of global researchers in any discipline whose works draws upon ‘haunting’ in some capacity, to facilitate cross-disciplinary discussions and establish a network of scholars working at the forefront of research in this area. We invite expressions of interest from anyone whose research engages with any aspect of haunting and is working in literature, philosophy, history, cultural and media studies, music, modern languages, sociology, and others.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided, so please indicate any dietary requirements or food allergies about which we should be aware.

If you have any questions about the conference, please contact Dr Rob Lloyd ([email protected]) or Thomas Payré ([email protected]).

Arswyd(us): Dulliau Amlddisgyblaethol Cynhadledd Flynyddol

Cynhadledd Ddeuddydd - Ariennir gan Cornea Diwylliant Ymchwil Prifysgol Caerdydd

Dyddiad: Dydd Mawrth 10fed – Dydd Mercher 11eg Mehefin 2025

Lleoliad: Prifysgol Caerdydd (Fformat Hybrid - Ar-lein ac yn Bersonol)

Trefnwyr: Dr Robert Lloyd (Prifysgol Caerdydd), Thomas Payré (Prifysgol Caerdydd ac CY Cergy Paris Université), Dr Louise Child (Prifysgol Caerdydd), Morgan Lee (Prifysgol Caerdydd) and Padmanabha Reddy Addula (Prifysgol Caerdydd ac Prifysgol Bryste)

Mae’r syniad o ‘arswyd’ yn cwmpasu tapestri cyfoethog o ystyron sy’n ymestyn y tu hwnt i ddychmygion sbectrol ffuglen Gothig. Gall ddynodi olion neu effaith barhaol rhywbeth absennol neu gudd, gan amlygu fel atgofion, emosiynau, neu weddillion o'r gorffennol sy'n dylanwadu'n barhaus - neu'n tarfu - ar y bresennol. Yn dreiddiad o’r rhyfedd, mae’n cymylu’r llinellau rhwng yr hyn sy’n gyfarwydd ac yn gythryblus, gan greu awyrgylch iasol o ansicrwydd neu ymdeimlad o anniddigrwydd sy’n mynd y tu hwnt i ddealltwriaethau confensiynol o’r byd a sut rydym yn ceisio gwneud synnwyr ohono. Ond mae helbul hefyd yn ymestyn y tu hwnt i brofiadau unigol, gan dreiddio i feysydd torfol a chymdeithasol. Gall symboleiddio gwrthdaro heb ei ddatrys, gwirioneddau cudd, neu faterion cymdeithasol sy'n gofyn am gydnabyddiaeth, gan ei ffurfweddu fel trosiad pwerus o fewn testunau diwylliannol yn ogystal â phynciau academaidd a disgyblaethau beirniadol. Mae'n croesi ffiniau amser a gofodol, gan ymwthio o'r gorffennol - neu, yn wir, y dyfodol - i'r presennol (ac y gwrthwyneb), ac yn trwytho lleoedd â phresenoldeb (di)parhaus, heb eu rhwymo gan amseroldeb llinellol.

Mae cymhlethdod arswyd yn gorwedd yn ei allu i grynhoi’r cydadwaith rhwng y gweledig a’r anweledig, y diriaethol a’r anniriaethol, gan wahodd ysgolheigion i ddatrys ei gymhlethdodau a deall ei oblygiadau ar draws agweddau amrywiol o brofiad dynol. Nod y gynhadledd ddeuddydd hon yw dod ag ystod amrywiol o ymchwilwyr byd-eang mewn unrhyw ddisgyblaeth y mae eu gwaith yn tynnu ar ‘arswyd’ mewn rhyw fodd, i hwyluso trafodaethau trawsddisgyblaethol a sefydlu rhwydwaith o ysgolheigion sy’n gweithio ar flaen y gad ym maes ymchwil yn y maes hwn. Rydym yn gwahodd datganiadau o ddiddordeb gan unrhyw un y mae eu hymchwil yn ymwneud ag unrhyw agwedd ar ‘arswyd’ ac sy’n gweithio ym meysydd llenyddiaeth, athroniaeth, hanes, astudiaethau diwylliannol a’r cyfryngau, cerddoriaeth, ieithoedd modern, cymdeithaseg, ac eraill.

Darperir cinco a lluniaeth, felly nodwch unrhyw ofynion dietegol neu alergeddau bwyd y dylem fod yn ymwybodol ohonynt.

Os oes gennych unrhyw gwestiynau am y gynhadledd, cysylltwch â Dr Rob Lloyd ([email protected]) neu Thomas Payré ([email protected]).
