Details

The New York University Center for Bioethics and the New York Institute of Philosophy are pleased to invite submissions of abstracts for the inaugural ‘Autonomy: Theory and Practice’ workshop to be held at New York University on Friday and Saturday, October 3-4, 2025.

The goal of the workshop is to bring together scholars working on theoretical approaches to autonomy with those seeking to better understand how autonomy and respect for autonomy manifest in practice.

Invited speakers include Daniel Brudney (University of Chicago), David Enoch (Hebrew University of Jerusalem/University of Oxford,), Sophie Gibert (New York University/University of Pennsylvania), Jennifer Hawkins (Duke University), and Natalie Stoljar (McGill University).

In addition to the invited speakers, there will be two additional speakers selected based on the quality of submitted abstracts.

Please submit extended abstracts of between 1000 and 1200 words via Google Forms (https://forms.gle/EqddRQcEGbp7M5ni9) by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on Sunday, June 15, 2025. Abstracts should be formatted for blind review, and papers should be suitable for presentation in 30-40 minutes. Email notifications of acceptance will be sent out no later than Monday, June 30, 2025.

When submitting your abstract, please also indicate whether you would be interested in serving as a commentator-chair in the event that your abstract is not selected for presentation. Commentator-chairs will be responsible for asking the first question during Q&A (they will have access to the paper being presented in advance) and for chairing the remainder of the Q&A.

The workshop is organized by Daniel Fogal (New York University), Sophie Gibert (New York University/University of Pennsylvania), and Ben Schwan (Case Western Reserve University). Funding is generously provided by the New York Institute of Philosophy (https://as.nyu.edu/research-centers/nyip.html), directed by Paul Boghossian and Miranda Fricker.
