Details

It is a sad reality that war remains one of the most pressing political issues of our time.

Join us for a discussion with two acclaimed Oxford political philosophers, Jeff McMahan and Elad Uzan, which will address the ethical dimensions of war, with particular attention to issues raised by the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

The conversation will address urgent philosophical questions: How should we understand the just-war principles governing the resort to war, such as the requirements of just cause, necessity, and proportionality? When, if ever, is compromise with an aggressor morally justified? What responsibilities do other countries bear when they have the power to intervene? And what does justice require at the end of a war—for victims, perpetrators, and the international community?

The event is open to students and academics, as well as the general public.
