I invite colleagues to a unique and timely event: “In Conversation with Syed Farid Alatas: Re-Thinking Knowledge, Intellectual Canons, and the Decolonisation of Academia”, taking place in person on July 2nd, 2025, from 12pm to 3pm (including lunch) in central London.

This engaging dialogue features renowned sociologist and theorist Professor Syed Farid Alatas (National University of Singapore; University of Malaysia), known for his pioneering work on decolonial thought and epistemologies. He will be joined by two discussants: Shuchen Xiang, a specialist in Chinese philosophy at Xidian University (China), and Ibrar Bhatt, an expert in applied linguistics and higher education from Queen’s University Belfast (UK).

The event takes a dynamic Q&A format, offering critical and interdisciplinary reflections on how global academia can move beyond Eurocentric canons and embrace more pluralistic forms of knowledge production.

As the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) is a charity, its events are members-only, but I can’t recommend joining highly enough. I have been attending since my PhD days, and the Society consistently delivers top-tier academic events and training. This session is a perfect example of the kind of intellectually rich and globally relevant event the Society offers. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind event.
